Si'pt. 19 -- The movie industry and fans through out the mi I Ion today mourned the death of Frank Morgan, beloved i comedian whose sly chuckle and skillful double-take carried him through nearly four decades oX lame. Morgan died in his sleep at his lleverly Hills mansion yesterday. He was 59. A doctor said death apparently resulted from a heart attack. His wife of 35 years, Al ma, found him dead when she awoke at noon. "He just went to sleep and nev er woke up." said his business manager, Mrs. Margerite Corry. Funeral arrangements were in complete. Morgan had spent Saturday evening at home, holding a quiet dinner party with his son. George. 32, his wife and two house guests, and went to bed about 11. Was Hard Worker Friends said his health had nev er appeared better. Recently he had taken up swimming in addi tion to his long-standing sport as a yachtsman. The jovial hard-working actor had Just finished a part in "Key to the City" at MGM, where he had been under contract since he came to Hollywood in 1333 andj was reaoy to piay mmaio Bin in "Annie Get Your Gun." Morgan was born in New York City in 1890. the son of a wealthy importer, George Wupperman. He worked as a toothbrush sales man, cowboy, ship stoker and dishwasher and then went on the stage when he heard that his brother Ralph, rmw 61, had given up a law career to become an ac- tor. He took his brother's stage name of Morgan. After making good in vaude ville, Mdrgan played in "Rosalie," "Seventh Heaven." and "Gentle men Prefer Blondes," then played in two silent movies produced in New York. - Did Character Roles Then he headed for Hollywood and won parts in early talkies. Later, his graying hair brought him tharacter roles as an aging roue with a wandering eye for a pretty leg. But as a dramatic ac tor he won two nominations for academy awards, for "The Af fairs of Cellini" and "Tortilla Flat." To play a broken-down baseball player in "The Stratton Storv," he recently shaved his mustache for the first time in 10 years. It had grown back by thetime he died. His marriage to the former Al ma Muller, New York socialite, was one of the happiest in Holly wood. Louis B. Mayer, Morgan's boss at MGM, said he "made the world a happier place for the laughter he brought into it. His passing is a deep personal loss to me and to all in the studio who enjoyed the inspiration of his friendship." QUAKE RECORDED Los Angeles, Sept. 19 'III A light earthquake jolted the south eastern section of Los Angeles last night, breaking a few dishes and setting off burglar alarms. Irving Steers, who has been working in Portland for the sum mer, is visiting his mother, Mrs. Gladys Steers, and his grand mother, Mrs. Edith Smith. Mr. and Mrs. William Fisher and children. Jeff and Marsha, went to Salem Friday afternoon to spend the week end. Mrs. Henry Walker entertained at twp tables of bridge and a handkerchief shower honoring Mrs. A. B. Widdows. Mrs. Na omi Shopshlre won high honors. The Widdows are planning to move to Washington in the near future. Mrs. Phyllis Gilbert, who is em ployed at Craft's, is spending a week's vacation with relatives in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jones have returned to Redmond for a brief visit before going to Eu gene to make their home, while Raymond completes his college course. Mrs. Jones was Mavis Knorr. The Jones are visiting their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ray mond Jones Sr:. and Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Knorr. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Murray and Helen went to Portland Friday night to visit relatives over the week end. While there they will attend a miscellaneous bridal shower for the two granddaugh ters, Donna and Dorothy Smith. Mrs. John Benning won high honors Monday night at the Oc tagon bridge club meeting. Mrs. Hazel Cate look second' honors. - Word has been received of the marriage of Millc.n Harper and Virginia Duncan, both of Red mond. Harper was graduated from Redmond Union high school with the class of '49. Virginia was enrolled as a senior this year. Toastmasters held their regu lar meeting Sept. 15 at the Red mond hotel. Jay Shively, presided over the meeting. Louis Ebert acted as toastmaster, and Dr. Christjansen had charge of ta ble topics. Five-minute speakers were C. E. Thompson, who talked an United Nations, and Mr. Dug gen on world finance. Mr. Ell was guest speaker. Twelve members were present. Plans to raise funds for the delegates' trip to the annual con vention at Kansas City were dis cussed at the initial meeting of the Future Farmers of America Wednesday morning. The 46 members present . decided that each boy would stay out of school one day and work, contributing S3 of his earnings to the conven tion delegates fund. Sept. 19 ll Brown eyed Susan Carol Cross, who was not expected to live more than a few hours when she was born here prematurely weighing only one pound. 9 ounces, toilay cele brated her second birthday. Susan weighed only 5 onces and measured 14 inches from head to toes when she was born at Salem general hospital. Her birth was nearly three months premature, and doctors gave her little chance of living more than a few hours. She was placed in an incubator and fed through a tube. After three weeks in the hospital, she went home with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Cross of Salem, but was kept in the incubator most of the time for several weeks more. Today Susan Is healthy, viva cious, smiling, and weiglis ISMi pounds. She is 30 inches tall. Mrs. Cross said she has a "wonderful" appetite. FRENCH PLANE CRASHES Brazzaville, French West Afri ca. Sept. 19 upi A French mili tary plane carrying 18 persons was reported to have crashed to day at the Pointe Noire airport some 300 miles west of here on the Atlantic coast. First reports said all aboard were killed. S. air force C-51 Skymaster piloted by Col. Bernt Balchen landed here yesterday after a 4. 000-mile, flight from Alaska over the north pole. Balchen. Norwegian American arctic explorer and aviator, made the trip in 22 hours and 30 min utes. He is stationed In Alaska with the air force. (Air force circles In Washing ton said such flights now were considered "routine" Iwcause so many B-29 superfortresses have flown over the north pole. It was speculated that Balchen may have made the flight as a good will gesture to Scandinavia.) Balchen piloted Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his first flight over the south pole.
