Oakland Facing Major Task
In Overcoming Hollywood's
Pacific Coasf League Lead
By Don Thackrey
(United Press Sports Writer)
San Francisco, Sept. 12 (UJ The Oakland Oaks have a
kiiiR-Ki.o tank if they are to catch the Hollywood Stars in the
Pacific Coast league race, but at least their competition for
the last two weeks of the season will be from the common
people.
The defending champs are four full games out in first place
with 14 contests left. If Hollywood plays only .600 ball, the
Acorns must win 1 of 1 4 to tie,
no mean feat. The Oaks, how-,
ever, will finish the season
playing last place Los Angeles
and seventh-place Portland,
while the Stars must meet
sixth position San Francisco
and ambitious third-place Se
attle. The Stars opened the gap to
lour games yesterday by taking
both ends of a double-header trom
San Diego while the Oaks were
splitting with Sacramento. Holly
wood won 6-5 in 10 frames and
then 7-3. Oakland squeezed
through with a 3-2 win in the
lirst game, but dropped the sec
ond one 6-1.
Meanwhile Seattle moved into
third with 9-1 and 8-6 wins over
San Francisco. Los Angeles beat
Portland 7-4 and then lost 7-5.
Pinky Woods was the pitching
and batting hero of the first Hol
lywood game, singling in the win
ning run in the 10th and pitching
his 21st win as a relief hurler.
In the second game Glen Moul
der and rookie Jim Hughes held
San Dfego to four hits while Al
Unser and Irv Noren contributed
-homers to the Hollywood cause.
Hughes got the win. Orestes Min
oso homered for San Diego.
Oakland staged a three-run ral
. ly i n the eighth to come from be
.hind and win the first game. The
big blow was a pinch double, good
'" for two runs, by Maurice Van Ro
tays who took over the batting
-.chore with two strikes already
. called on him. Parriell Woods bat
ting for the pitcher, had twice af
. tempted to bunt when Van Ro
bays was sent to pinch hit for the
pinch hitter.
Hurls S-Hitter
' The second game was Sacra
mento all the way with Mai Mai
lette hurling a three-hitter. Oak
land made three boots in one in
ning to give away two runs and
Jim Tabor and Joe Marty homer
ed for more runs later.
- Herm Besse left-handed a three
hitter for Seattle's first win, but
' they Just pounded out more runs
" In the wild, - free-hitting , second
one; Dario Lodigiani, Jim Moran
, and Mickey. Rocco homered for
' the' Seals,' but 'tas not fcriough.
Rocco alio homered for -th Seals'
only run in the opener. - .
' Los Angeles came from behind
', in the first game with Portland to
' .score five in the ninth and win.
Clarence Maddern's grand slam
homer was the telling blow.
In the second one a three-run
last frame for the Angels fell
short and rookie Hal Saltzman
got his 21st win. Cecil Garriott
artd Frank Gustine hit round-trippers
for the Angels.
GRAZIANO FAVORED

Wednesday night.

New York. Sept. 12 UP There
was a feeling in baseball circles
today that the New York Giants'
Larry Jansen and the Philadel
phia Athletics had settled the
major league pennant races.
It was Jansen who sent Pee
Wee Reese, take-charge guy of
the battling Brooklyn Dodgers,
to the sidelines for a week when
he struck the scrappy shortstop
on the elbow and Jarred Brook
lyn hopes of catching the front
flying St. Louis Cardinals.
And it was the A's who pound
ed the sod on top of the Red
Sox just a bit more firmly by
burying the Bosox twice as the
front-running Yankees took two
from the incredibly inept Sena
tors. Jansen admittedly felt bad
about winging Reese. But that
isn't going to help the Dodgers.
For the Cards moved a game
and a half on top of Brooklyn by
winning two from Cincinnati
and without Reese that's a right-
wide gap to close. Brooklyn still
beat the Giants for its eighth
win in nine games but without
Reese the victories will be far
ther apart.
S Games Bark
Boston's double defeat pushed
the Bosox three games back of
the Yankees five of those de
feats being in the lost column
which would make a Boston pen
nant something of a miracle. The
A's did it. too. by stealing the
Red Sox thunder, walloping four
homers. 1
Meanwhile, the - Yankees a
good team with more than its
shore of horseshoes had a walk
athon going with Washington.
The third inning of the opener
required SO minutes as lour Sen
ator "throwers" walked 11 men,
which isn't good pitching even in
Sauk center. For. a while .old
time Senator rooters thought Al
Schacht was pitching again..
Which Tnade Al very mad,
charging,. . .-w'uz .never that
lousy." 1 n.
.Next-the-Yanks go out with a
good chance to -just .about close
it out .against the St. Louis
Browns. The Brownies broke a
seven-game losing streak against
the well-scalped Cleveland In
dians. So that takes care of their
quota of victories for the rest
of the season.
It can be reported now, with
fairly certain accuracy, that Red
Rolfe will be back next year
with the Detroit Tigers. They
won their 10th straight and 18th
out of 20 against Chicago. That's
a real scoop son.
Just about the biggest news
in' the National league was the
continued supercharged apple
knocking by Ralph Kiner of the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
Kiner is the young man they
are touting as the one who even
tually will erase the late Babe
Ruth's record 60 home runs, set
in 1927.
And it is just possible that
Kiner will do it this season!
He belted numbers 45 and 46
yesterday personally to flatten
the Cubs. He's still a long shot
against that big 60, but he now
needs only 14 in 21 games.
On this date in 1927 the Bam
bino only had 50 four more
than Kiner's total today.

Another Pennant
Almost Certain
For N. Y.Yanks
By Carl LundquLst
(UnlMd rrM Sporu Wriltr)
New York. Sept. 12 Uli The
magic number was 15 for the
New York Yankees today. And,
translated into third grade arith
metic, that means they can pol
ish up the centerfield flagpole
for their 16th pennant in 28 years.
Three full games In front with
but 19 to play, any combination
of 15 Yankee victories or Boston
Red Sox defeats will settle the
issue.
It means the Yankees can play
bad ball their worst of the sea
son and still win. It means that,
allowing for the worst, the Yan
kees can drop more than half of
their games and still make Bos
ton win two out of every three
of their remaining 15 to gain
even a tie.
If New York wins only nine
games and loses 10, then in order
even to tie. Boston will have to
win 10 out of 15; or 11 out of
15 to take it all.
Position Secure
The Bombers, who have never
been out of first place since open
ing day. made their position considerably-
more secure yesterday
when they won two weird games,
20 to 5 and 2 to 1, from the mis
erable last place Senators while
Boston was dropping 6 to 4 and
4 to 0 heartbreakers to the Ath
letics. In the first game the Yankees '
put on a 12-run third inning in
which they broke a major league
record by drawing 11 walks. They
got but four hits in the melee,
one on a collision, betweeti out
fielder Ed Stewart and shortstop
Sam . Dente which Incapacitated
both players. '
In the 5 ' inning second game,
the Yankees led 2 to 0 when the
Senators got successive doubles
by Roberto Ortiz and Eddie Rob
inson. Relief pitcher Joe Page was
tagged for a single by Clyde Voll-
mer and it looked as if Robin
son could doe-trot home, but un-
explainably coach Clyde Milan
held him up at third, men Lciaie
Yost hit a pop into short left
which barely eluded Phil Rizzuto.
Again Robinson could have made
it by turtle-back, but after a slow
start lost his footing. Page fig
ured he couldn't stretch his luck
any further so he bore down and
ended the' game with a double
play. - j
Detroit In Driven j ,
Detroit, k-putting-on'-a-' gallant
but prqbably futile, stretch drive,
took over third place by beating
the White Sox. 1 to 0, at Chicago
for the 10th straight victory and
its 18th' in the last 20.
The Browns knocked the once
proud world champion Indians
into fourth place by beating them
5 to 4, with a four run outburst
in the sixth, touched off by Jack
Graham's homer.
Relentless as ever, the Cardi
nals again went Vi games in
front of the Dodgers in the Na
tional league race by defeating
the Reds, 7 to 5 and 7 to 4.
The Dodgers won a costly vic
tory from the Giants, 10 to 5,
for their eighth decision in nine
