gained further today but lost part
of their rise before closing time.
Volume picked up early In the
session, aided then by large blocks
of the low-priced Issues, notably
utilities. Thereafter when the rise
ran Into a bit of difficulty the
dealings fell off. However, the
day's total turnover was the best
since mid-August.
At the day's highs, the Indus
trial average waa within less than
Vh points from the year's high
made three weeks ago, and the
utility average was at Its best
level since Feb. 24, 1947. The rail
group lagged behind other sec
tions and many of the Isauea
yielded all of their gains made In
the morning dealings.
