Forest fire losses In the United States during 1918 are estimated at nearly $32,500,000, Willi 10,557, 000 acres burned over; however, this Is considerably less than the lire losses ol the preceding year. Sharp Decline Felt by Stocks New York, Aug. 29 (IPi Stocks experienced their worst break in two months In a quiet session to day. Losses extended to more than a point In the main list. Some pre ferred and special Issues had de clines ranging to as much as 3 points. One outstanding excep tion, Coca-Cola, sold as high as 104, a new high tor the year and up 14 points from the previous close. It lost part of that advance. Wall street rumors said Coca Cola will split Its stock in the near future. Conservatives decid ed this theory of the rise and pointed out the heavy business this company, along with other soft drink units had done during the recent hot spelL All sections of the main list reg istered declines with the Indus trial group hardest hit. Steels, motors, oils, mercantlles, tire is sues and special stocks declined Tires followed Goodrich down as the latter responded to strike news. Goodrich touched 61 oil 1, met support, and declined again. Other tires eased in sympa thy. Tobaccos were mixed. Steel issues sagged small frac tions despite another rise in the steel operating rate. Outlook for record August pro duction of automobiles sustained the motors. The leaders started firm and then sagged with the main list. Oil Issues for the most part were lower. Rails lost frac tionally, utilities were mixea. PORTLAND MARKETS Portland, Aug. 29 mi Portland butter and egg prices were un changed today. Hawaiian Sugar Movement Cut Washington, Aug. 29 (IP The government announced t o d a that one-fifth of the sugar Ha wail was scheduled to deliver to the United States this year has been reassigned to other produc ing areas -because of the Ha waiian dock strike. The agriculture department said it has re-allocated 200.000 tons of Hawaii's 1,052,000-ton marketing quota to Puerto Ric- an, Cuban and mainland cane sugar producers. Officials, said Hawaii's sugar shipments to the United States were so far behind schedule, as a result of the shipping tie-up, that it was certain the island producers could not deliver more than 852,000 tons against their 1919 allotment by the Dec, deadline. Earlier in the year, officials said, it had been expected that Hawaii would meet its quota, FIRE UNDER CONTROL Xfefnll.
