V PAGE TWO THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 1949 Antelopemen Hold Sessions On Mountain Three thousand feet above the floor of Warner valley and the Wilson and Alexander cattle ranch of pioneer days is a bold escarpment, seemingly beyond the reach of motorists and not fur from the point termed the most isolated spot in all Amer ica. The towering, massive uplift Is Hart mountain, and its highest point Is Warner peak, 8020 feet high, in the range region of Lake county. Annually there Is held on the mountain a convention, with men only attending and with dogs, guns and airplanes barred. It is the meeting place of the Order of Antelope, an organization unique in North America. Despite the isolation of Hart mountain and its remoteness from paved roads, as many as 360 have attended conventions on the uplift which geologists call a "horst". Dignitaries, including a Justice of the supreme court, New York financiers, Nevada mine operators and governors of Oregon, have attended the con ventions. Story Is graced What is the story behind the Order of Antelope and isolated Hart mountain? It is a top story of the western rangelands. ; In 1932, a group of men inter ested in game conservation and the perpetuation of antelope that once ranged over the region in great herds, formed the Order of Antelope, under sponsorship of the Lake county chamber of com merce, in Lakeview. Meetings of the order, it was agreed, should be on Hart mountain, at a site later designated as the "Blue Sky I hotel". Some 50 persons attended that first meeting. In two years, attendance was over the 300 mark. Only persons invited could attend. No dues were charged. Sponsors of the group were amaz ed to discover that the Order of Antelope has been so readily ac cepted. Conventions were sus pended in the war years. When they were resumed, new growth was noted. Leaders were frankly at a loss to explain why so many sought invitations to the conventions, and whv sn manv rptumpd. vear after year. Some called the Blue Sky hotel a place where the spirit of a hunter's camp prevailed. Others said the gatherings were the outcropping of the desire of men to get together a desire that probably dated back to pre historic days when males of the tribe congregated for some ritual that preceded a giant hunt. Al though guns are banned, the spir it of the hunt Is still dominant at the camp on the mountain. Uulded Trip Arranged One of the highlights of the an nual Hart mountain conventions are guided trips out into the An telope country, to the Guano lakes and as far east as Beatys butte. On these trips, the gunless hunters have ample opportunity of viewing big herds of anteloe. Like true tribesmen, the moun tain tourists frequently leave their cars in secluded valleys and stalk the pronghorns on foot. Generally, It is possible for the Antelopemen to look over low rims, and to watch antelope graz ing below, at a distance of a few hundred yards. However, even the click of cameras can be de tected by the antelope "lookouts", and in a flash the swift animals go over the hill. Climbs of Hart mountain are available for the more sturdy "hunters", and on those hikes the men see some of the largest deer in the northwest big bucks with massive antler spreads. Persons using glasses say they have counted spreads bearing as many as 26 points. These spreads. An telopemen say, are magnificent when viewed against the Hart mountain skyline. Grouse and sagehens are abundant in the up lands. Few Reach Peak Out of the hundreds who visit Hart mountain yearly, not more than 30 reach the most lofty point of the range. This Is Warner oeak. 8020-foot high pinnacle from which can be viewed some of the most awesome geology in I all America. In this region, earth i scientists say, the earth cracked ; and warped under great tension. ; Block mountains were forced up into the clouds. In some places. : blocks between two uplifts re- mained at their original lava or; were lowered, forming trap bas- ! ins for vast lakes of ancient ; times. One of these was prehis-: toric lake Warner, more than 100 miles long and over 260 feet deep. Old shore lines of the lake, high above shrunken remnants of the present, are visible. Even mineral collectors find the Hart mountain region of interest. ' In the lava uplands, where rhyo-', lite has been weathered by the : storms of long centuries, opal is ! found in- abundance, and agate material covers the ground. At j one spot on tne rim, opals are , found in a cave. Such is the region where the ; Antelopemen "gather yearly for ; their unique convention, held un-. der blue skies and around blazing campfires.
