PAGE SIX THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON MONDAY. AUGUST 22, 1949 Longshoremen Now Requesting U.S. Mediation By WHIiimI 1. fVrhart (United I'm. Stuff Crtriwtioiiilent I Honolulu, Auk. -'2 'Hi CIO longshoremen expressed willing ness today to mediate their 115-day-old dispute In Washington but employers Indicated, objec tions. The employers previously Ye Joeted such a proposal and an employer spokesman said " you ran draw your own conclusions" fi-om that stand. It was learned In Washington that federal mediation chief Cy rus Ching did not want to leave the mainland while the threat of coal and steel strikers existed. Meanwhile, longshore leaders met in San Francisco to discuss the strike. One of the chief is sues was whether they would recommend that the chief issues was that the membership vote against ratifying coastwise long shore contracts, until the Hono lulu strike Is settled. Bridges (uoted Harry Bridges, longshore union boss, said he would campaign against ratification unless a dis pute over loading Hawaii-bound vessels is resolved. Matson Steamship Lines has called for gangs of longshoremen to load the ship Hawaiian Refiner in San Francisco. The longshore men have refused to cross a picket line set up by two strikers flown there from Honolulu. In order to keep the waterfront peace, the Pacific Maritime asso ciation, representing west coast shippers, voted to refer the mat ter to the coast arbitrator. At the same time, the union- and the PMA planned this week to nego tiate a new picket line clause in their contract. Even though the longshore leaders decide to uphold ratifica tion of the contract because of the Hawaii strike, the longshore men have indicated there would be no new tieup of west coast docks.
