John, bud his first birthday parly
on August 3, Ik-c iiuw of the work
of Oil- Inslilule of logopedics
liern in Wichita.
He'd nut bad a birthday before,
because il wouldn't have meant
anyihing to him. But 10 months
at the instituie have taught him
how to enjoy himself to some
extent like normal children.
You see, John is not a normal
child. He Is a spastic, better
known as cerebral palsied. Spas
lie children usually do not get
much of a chance to enjoy them
selves, for there are few places
like the Institute here.
We had to make a lO.OOO mlle
trip so John would have his
chance to learn to talk.
Movie Men Help
He was two years old when he
was hit by encephalitis. That left
hlm with cerebral palsy. Ik
seemed doomed to the life of the
spastic until we were able to
bring him here through the gen
erosity of Hollywood millionaire
Charles P. Skouras and the In
terest of Paramount producer
Cecil B. deMllle.
When we arrived 10 months
ago John was a bundle of mis
directed energy, nerves and unco
ordinated actions. Dr. Martin F.
Palmer admitted him to the insti
tute and the long slow work of

ishing of the front of the Earl
Zeek building. An overhead door
will be installed, and a new stuc
co front constructed.

IMPORTANT ANOCNCEMENT
Bend Electric
COMPANY
644 Franklin Phone 159
for Cure
rehabilitation was started.
John has made steady, but
slow, pi ogress. He can say a few
words and he knows what they
mean. At his birthday party he
talked about "pop." He didn't
mean me. He meant soda pop.
He has lo ask for It before hp
gets it. He drinks through a
straw. Ten months ago he would
have chewed the straw to bits.
Eager To l.iarn
We take John to the Institute
every morning for a half hour
lesson. He is eager to go. Once
there, he has only one interest
to get Into his little classroom
with his teacher, Mrs. John J.
Snodgrass.
We watch the lesson through
a one-way mirror and try to dup
licate as much of it as possible
at home. In the 10 months he
has learned to form his mouth
for a number of words and how
to say them. He also has learned
to sit still, instead of Jumping
and rushing about aimlessly.
On thp day before his birth
day, I was asked to bring him
to the Eagle Office, Where my i
colleagues had arranged a little i
birthday party for him. He sat 1
on a table, fascinated by the ;
birthday cake and the city room I
staff singing "Happy Birthday." .
Another Party
Ten months ago he probably
would have put his foot in the
cake. Certainly h would not have
Interested him.
Then we had our own birthday
party. His brother, Robert, 5; sis
ter, Margo. 9, and seven-month-old
Christine, born here last De
cember, were there. So were
neighborhood children, for John
likes now to play with them, even
if he cannot yet understand or
take part in many of their games.
That alone makes our long trip
worth while: John had a birth
day party like other children do.
The institute shortly will move
into its brand new $1,550,000, 40
acre center, with its 160 housing
units and grand big administra
tive and training building. Ped
haps we can move in there with
John and then he and other un
fortunate speech defectives can
celebrate another birthday, the
birth of a new and wonderful
center to show the world what
can be done in their field.
