THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, 1M9 M li i mi I PAGE TEN If Dr. Samuel Green, Imperial Klan Wizard, Is Dead Atlanta, Aug. 19 'lP Tlie wlilto robcd flics of Ku Klux Klansmen were left without a Ipader today by the audden death of Dr. Sam uel Green, Imperial wizard of the invisible empire. No heir-apparent was known outside the anonymous group of grand officers, who are expected to meet here soon to name a suc cessor. Hie names of oiher klan leaders were kept secret during Cii-een's period of klan "recon struction." A former head of the national klan, Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans, feared there would be trouble from the "tempestuous organiza tion," particularly if there is a struggle for the leadership. He said he knew of no klansman who could run it with so firm a hand as Green. ' That firmness was shown last week "When Green ordered all members of the association of Georgia klans to throw away their masks, and revoked the charters of three klaverns which he found responsible for violent acts and disregard of klan rules. Bad Heart Attack Green, 59, knitted the shreds of the national organization to gether after It disbanded in 1941, in the face of federal income tax suits. From 12 Georgia klaverns, he produced what he claimed to bo a klan of 100.000 members, ac tive In 120 Georgia, and Tennessee counties. The obstetrician and gynecolo gist had a heart attack late yes twnlay while supervising garden work at his home here. He died almost Immediately. His body was taken to a funeral home where, only eight hours before, services rind been held for Mar garet Mitchell, author of "(lone With the Wind." Green repeatedly vowed that he would "Danish from the Invisible empire" any klansman found to be connected with the recent vio lence and night-riding outrages. He backed this up by revoking the charters of klaverns in Chat tanooga, Tenn., and Trenton and Lafayette, Ga. At the same time, he announced his elevation from grand dragon to imperial wizard. A native of Atlanta, he worked his way through 20 years to the top of the state klan organiza tion and membership on the na tional council. Evans, imperial wizard for half that time, de scribed him as "an up-standing citizen ... I have always found him standing for what ' is right and helping other people." Funeral services for Green will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. It was not immediately known whether klan ritual will be used, with robed members in attend ance. The family was reported to have asked that no mention of the klan be made In connection with his death.
