PAGE EIGHT THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 194? British to Fight For Hong Kong If Reds Attack HonR KonR nil Hour Kong may bo the spot where the east west cold wur turns hot, in the opinion of British hl?h policy planners who regard the situa tion here as being of the same explosive Importance as the Ber lin airlift. That, according to an authori tative spokesman here, is the main reason why Britain in the past two months has trebled the number of troops being sent here to forestall a possible attack ry the Chinese communists. Two other factors also influ enced the British government to expend Its forces here. 1. Protection for the thousands of British subjects, including Chi nese, Indians and Eurasians, who live here and owe allegiance to the .British crown. 2. Preservation of the colony's status as the show window and sales counter for British goods and exports. Troops Rrought In British military sources here frankly admit they don't know whether the communists will at tack Hong Kong or not. It is apparent, however, that Britain believes the chances of such an attack have increased In the past few months. That is why troop postings here, originally" set at about 8.000, have been raised to 25,000 and may possibly go higher. Britain's decision was doubtless Influenced by several factors: 1. Continued truculent state ments ' by Chinese communist big-wigs castigating foreign "im perialism" and reaffirming soli darity with soviet Russia, as well as propaganda blasts at the Hong QI AKE HITS Tl'KKF.V Ankara, Turkpy, Aug. 18 'Hi A strong earthquake shook thp town ol Erurum in eastern Tur key yesterday for 20 seconds, de stroying a number of buildings, It was reported today. The num!er of easualties was not yet known. In London, Seismologist II. V. Shaw recorded a "severe earth quake" the epicenter of which was estimated to lie 2,300 miles away, probably in the Caucacus or Kurdistan.) ! Kong authorities themselves. I 2. Acts of violence against for I eign consular officials and busi ness men in communist China, together with complaints from British business men that condi tions under the communists arc becoming intolerable. 3. The Wanton shelling of Brit ish warships in the Yangtze river and the subsequent holding for ransom of & British sailors aboard the sloop HMS Amethyst while demands were made for compensation and apology. Britons Indignunt This last factor is the one which rankled deepest, for the royal navy holds a very special spot in the hearts of all Britons, whatever their political beliefs. "Why. it's just like slapping the king in the face." one Britisher exploded indignantly. The subsequent escape of the Amethyst was greeted with deep satisfact ion. British sources here admitted that while Britain may not be the world power she once was, she is still not going to stand for being "chivvied about." They concede Britons under commu nist jurisdiction may have to suf fer in silence, but Hong Kong is a British colony and just as much a part of the empire as Gibraltar or Malta. ? And Britain will fight just as hard to defend it.
