Training Setup Gets Under Way A program for training soil conservation service personnel In methods of making range utiliza tion surveys was begun in central Oregon this week under the direc tion of Waldo Frandsen, assistant chief of range management divi sion, SCS. of Portland, It was re ported today by Joseph B. Rogers, district conservationist Plans nnd procedures for con ducting a utilization survey of the central Oregon ranges arc being worked out by a group of con servationists from various parts of the state. Rogers stated that several small pastures in the area are to be sur veyed this week as a means of training SLS range men in the Bend work group. The protect of surveying nil range lands In the area will be completed in the fall, according to uogers. Assisting Frandsen in the train Ing program is E. W. WOMEN LIVE LONGER Washington, Aug. 18 Uli The public health service came up to day with figures to prove that, women the so-called weaker sex live longer than men. In 1S147, the service said, said, the average life expectancy for white women was 70.6 years while the average for men was only (J5.2. Among non-whites, the life expectancy for women was 69.9 and 5i.9 for men. The average for the total popu lation was 66.3 years. The city commission naa pro posed constructing the pound at Hie city dump, but on petition of the society, decided against such a move. Approval of the court was sought by delegates of the Hu mane society on the grounds tnat there might be some objection to the pound being located too close to the Infirmary. I he court agreed, however, that the one-half mile distance was great enough so that per sons at the Infirmary would not tie disturbed by noise which might be created by the dogs at the pound. The court also gave its approval to the society's plan to fence In about a lour or five acre area at the pound location, in which the dogs could be al lowed to run. SUrt Next Spring Mrs. Alice S. Orewller. presi dent of the society, today said that the organization hopes to begin construction of the pound sometime next spring, bhe stated that although no official plans have been drawn for the build ing, It undoubtedly will be a seven or eight kennel and run way unit. Representing the society at the court session yesterday were Frank Prince, Carl Johnson, Mrs. A. L. O. Schueler and Mrs. Ore wller. A delegation of city officials also appeared yesterday before the court. and was granted a re quest for a deed to some county property in the east section of the citv. The property involved the right-of-way of East 10th street between Franklin and Al- tin avenue. That particular sec tion of the street runs through county-owned property. Making up the city delegation were O. w. Cuthbertson, city manager; Percy W. Drost, superintendent ol the city street and water depart ments, and A. E. May, street de partment engineer. Routine business of authoriz ing payment of county bills was also conducted yesterday by the court. Court members present were C. L. Allen. Judge, and A. E. Stev ens and E. E. Varco, commis sioners.
