THE BEND BULLETIN BEND, OREGON .5 THURSDAY, JULY 28, 1949 PAGE TWO Coast Railroad Rate Increases Again at Issue Washington, July 28 IP West coait railroads and business in terests Wednesday objected to further Increases In freight rates between California and the Pa cific northwest. Water carriers have complained to the Interstate commerce com mission that railroad rates are unduly low. They want the ICC to require the same rail rates north and south along the coast as are now in effect on east-west traffic. . . The carriers claimed that low railroad rates have prevented them from getting back the busi ness they had before the war. The commission approved some railroad increases in 1947 but held the case open' for further inves tigation. ' v In final arguments before the commission Wednesday, John E. Hennessy, San Francisco, and James E. Lyons, Los Angeles, de fender the present railroad rates. Traffic. Insufficient Hennessy said there is not enough total traffic to allow the steamship lines to resume their pre-war 14 sailings a week be tween California and northern ports. If they did so, he said, not only would there be no ton nage at all left for the railroads, but there would be a deficiency of 200,000 tons in the amount the water carriers themselves would need for successful operation. ' Lyons said railroad cost stu dies have shown the coastwise rates to be ''well within the zone of reasonableness." Rates charg ed by competing forms of trans portation must "stand on their own feet," he said. . i The Washington and Oregon state public utilities commissions opposed.' further rail increases. Their representative, John H. Car kin, Salem, Ore., said any disrup tion of rate relationships involves . "the future welfare of industry and agriculture in the Pacific northwest"- . Rail rates already have gone up 78 per cent in that region since the war, he said. Of this, 34 per cent was a result of the, present case. Further in creases would Ipse markets for many northwestern farmers and industrialists, he argued. Stand Supported A similar stand was taken by, the Los Angeles and Oakland chambers, pi. commerce, repre sented by Ki L. Vore and E. A. Readi"respectively. Vore said the" whole problem stepns from labor troubles in the maritime industry which an Increase in railroad rartes; cannot cure. ' "-; .:, Further opposition to railroad Increases was registered by Lowe P. Siddons, ..Colorado Springs, Colo.; on behalf of Holly Sugar JACK in the J CORNER Sorry I am late again but t have been doing guide duty. So much so that I think I will hang out a shingle. - For well over a month now I have been taking "visiting firemen" on personally con ducted fishing trips. I have rowed boats, run outboards, baited hooks, tied on flies and supplied enough equipment to start a store, and the worst of it is, while we haven't done badly on getting fish, I still haven't had a trout feed. Am going to make up for It soon. Incidentally, It is a little late, but I want to congratulate Loyde Blakely on his appoint ment to the Game Commis sions It is a break for Bend and -for our Central Oregon fish and game distribution to have a man so well qualified to represent us. It just occur red to me that maybe it will give me a break next year on my "personally conducted fish ing tours." Maybe thare will be more fish. Anyway, it was a very well deserved appoint ment. - . If you sec our new wrecker and wonder about all the "fan cies," you can know that it was a compromise.. Over half of our outfit and the "Silent Partner" (only in the busi ness, -I can assure you) all wanted a white truck so I had It painted white. But the stripes were my Idea and I even got talked out of the kind of striping I thought would look good. But at least you can see it for a lung way and it will remind you that We are equipped to take care of your towing needs. In case you are wondering what will happen to old "Lulu May" (our old wrecker) we figured to put her out to pas ture. She's been a grand old girl and has done iter best, hut she's like the old gray marc "aint what she used lb he." These days arc going so fast mat we naven t miu-n nion Niiinmer left. It won't be long linlll you arc going to wonder about your' antifreeze. Hal brook Motors (Minnesota anil llniul, phono 080) have a good slock of tho permanent types, so why not get It now while the gelling Is good, I'll be swing you around. .IACK HAl.HHOOK. COMBINES COMBINE Martin S. Zimmerman, New Holland, Pa., tanner, is a man In a hurry when it comes to harvesting his big wheat crop. So he fixed up the unusual machine, above, by joining a standard automatic baler and a combine to make one machine that does several jobs. Here a two-man crew Is cutting the ripe wheat, threshing it to separate chat from grain, bag ging the grain and baling the left-over wheat straw in one continuous operation. At left, an automatically twine-tied bale is ready to drop from the baling chamber. New Hormone -Major Discovery Chicago. July 28 'IP The hor mone known as Acth offers the possibility of controlling a num ber of largely hopeless diseases and may be one of the most im portant medical discoveries ever made, it was announced today. A statement prepared under the supervision of Armour and com pany research laboratory chem ists said the material already has shown "dramatic relief" in the treatment of arthritis. It may make possible the control of rheumatic fever, mysasthenia gra vis, gout and other diseases, the statement said. ' "Those who have worked with Acth believe that it will be to medicine what the discovery of anesthesia was to surgery," the statement added. Disclosure of Acth ; in treatment of arthritis was made known some time ago. " Supply Inadequate ' The company said the broader problems are to obtain sufficient production of the hormone and to determine all the things it will do. Armour and company is the only current source. The hormone is obtained from the pituitary glands of hogs slaughtered in the various stock yards It takes 400.000 hog pitui taries to make a pound of Acth, Armour said. The company esti mates that if all possible hog pi tuitaries were saved and extract ed, about 2.600.000 ten-milligram dose units of Acth, or about 60 pounds, could be provided each year. This would be sufficient to treat only an insignificant frac tion of the 7.000.000 known cases of arthritis alone. Presently, the company said, it is impossible to meet thousands qf requests for Acth, . Corp. . and all other northern Cal ifornia sugar producers; Thomas F.
