PAGE SIX THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 1949 Fireworks Loom In Vice Probe At Los Angeles lx Angeles, July 27 IP T"ore man Harry Lawson of the county grand Jury today promised "plen ty of fireworks" tomorrow when the Juror are expected to return indictments against several high police officials. The jury adjourns for vacation lo morrow night after a three months vice investigation that turned up sensational charges of police graft and led to a general shakeup in the department. "The jury has done a fine job on a tough assignment," Lawson said. "It's In complete agreement, and I think you'U see plenty of fireworks." Tensely awaiting the jury's ac tion was Max Solomon, attorney for redhaired callhouse Madam Brenda Allen, who said he would try to "spring" her from jail on a habeas corpus writ as soon as the session is over. Review Sought Solomon sought a review of the shapely Hollywood vice queen"s case earlier this month on grounds that a police officer com mitted perjury in testimony that convicted her of attempted pan dering. But a judge refused to take action on grounds it might jeopardize the grand jury's work. Miss Allen, whose luxurious hillside bordello catered to an exclusive movieland clientele, told the grand jury she kept operating by making regular "protection" payoffs to police vice squad of ficers. Courthouse attaches said jurors were considering perjury or bribery indictments against six persons, including top. police brass. Meanwhile,. Edward (Neddie) Herbert, racket boss Mickey Co hen's No. 1 lieutenant, remained , near death from a shotgun blast j that mowed down him, Cohen and Sunset strip last Wednesday. Near Death Herbert, who narrowly missed injury in two previous gangland shootings, lapsed into uncon sciousness at Queen of Angels hospital yesterday as Cohen's' "boys" lined up to give him blood transfusions. Investigators were checking many widely-scattered angles in the shooting of Cohen, dapper lit tle gambling king whose charges of police shakedown attempts touched off the grand jury inves tigation. Developments included: Reports that Cohen left town for high level gangland meetings in the midwest shortly before the shooting, posibly to bolster his shaky standing with underworld chiefs. Rumors that Cohen had been borrowing, and lending large sums of money, and that the assassination attempt results from overenthusiastic debt collec tion by his henchmen. COMPLAINT WITHDRAWN Roy Irvin Barton, of Sisters, who was arrested July 18 on a charge of threatening to kill his wife, was released from the coun ty jail today after Mrs. Barton withdrew her complaint against mm. .
