PAGE TWELVfc the bend bulletin, bend, Oregon WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, 1949 Vinson to Aid In Selection Of New Justice Washington, July 20 ilPi Presi dent Truman will lean heavily on Chief Justice Fred M, Vinson for ndvlco in selecting a supreme eouit successor to (he late Justice Frank Murphy, well-informed sources said today. The top jurist, who has remain ed close to the While House since joining the court, is certain to lavor a man he Ivelieves can help keep harmony on the faction splintered bench. Because of a long standing tra dition that the high tribunal shall have at least one Catholic mem ber, the new Justice almost cer tainly will be of that faith. Geog raphy may be a factor, too. In that case, the candidate may come from the midwest or far west. A democrat is mose than likely. Names Mentioned Speculation In the capital pro duced a hatful of names for the $25,000 a year post. But lew, if any, of those mentioned seem to fit all the qualifications of relig ion, politics, geography and judi cial balance. Sen. Joseph C. O'Mahoney, D.. Wya, a prominent Catholic lay man and a staunch supporter of administration policies, was be lieved to be a front-running can didate. One factor that might work against him, however, is his age 64. Sen. J. Howard McGrath, dem ocratic national chairman, form er U. S. solicitor general and three-time governor of Rhode Is land, was gis-en a good chance for the job. So was Sen. Brien Me Mahon, D., Conn. Both are Cath olics and both come from states In which democratic governors would appoint successors. Service Station Permit Issued A new Shell Oil company serv ice station will be tmili on the east side of South Third, at Wil son street, C J. Morgan, general representative, confirmed today. Information on application for a building permit in the city hall indicated that the structure will be steel, with cement foundation. It will occupy a lot VJO x UW. un der a long-term lease. Morgan said. Construction is to begin im mediately. Bids have not been sought. Ad dllional details are being worked out by the company's engineering department in Portland. Morgan was unable to give an estimated date of completion. til TOO MANY GRASSHOPPERS Minneapolis U' T. L. Aam ondt, state entomologist, said a survey indicates the grasshop per populations had built up in Minnesota to a comparison with 1929 and 1930, just prior to the largest outbreak of grasshoppers in the history of the state.
