of the meeting when, complaining
of a cold, he left Blair house early.
He was escorted to the door by
Mr. Truman.

Tydings said as they parted.
"If I told you." Tydings said
"you wouldn't print it in the Inter
ests of the country."

had given Bird consolation during
his long wait for death, began
reading the doomed man's final
statement.
The trap was sprung when he
was half-way through the state
ment. Bird's body plummeted through
the well. The rope Jerked brief
ly, then was still.
Dead in I I Minutes
Dr. Elmer Hill waited a few
minutes, then examined the body.
He pronounced Bird dead just 14
minutes after he dropped through
the trap. .
Bird had written his statement
in his own handwriting and the
minister faltered once or twice
while reading the poorly-spelled
document.

court's denial of his petition for

Bird's latest and final attempt to

Bird thanked Smith for all
courtesies given him during his
stay in prison, shook hands, and
said: l guess that is It.
He ate fried chicken, bananas
and Ice cream for his final dinner.
It was the fourth time ht'd re
ceived his' request for a "last
meal.
Shortly before his first execu
ticn date. Bird began confessing
to 29 other slayings. At the re
quest of Gov. Dwight Green of
Illinois, the execution was post
poned by Gov. Mon Wallgren to
give oficials in Illinois a chance
to determine whether Bird actual
ly was connected with a killing
there.
He won later postponements by
making various appeals to appel
late and supreme courts.

At the time of his death, he still
was protesting that he never had
received a complete transcript of
his trial.
One of the persons who died
after Bird cast his "hex" on offi
cials connected with his trial was
Detective Sherman Lyons. It was
Lyons whom Bird told "all you
