THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND. OREGON THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 1949 PAGE SIXTEEN by Golden Wedding Celebrated Unusual Couple Whitewater, Wis. UP) August H. Wagner, 74, and his wife Ger trude, 70, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here. But August never has seen his wife. When Wagner was 21 he helped a neighbor smash rock with a sledge hammer. A chipped piece flew into one eye and de stroyed the nerves in both. He learned piano tuning and the Braille system at the state school for the blind at Janesville, Wis., where he met his wife. She used to crack hickory nuts and leave them on his desk. He learned to recognize her in those early days of romance by her footstep. Mrs. Wagner has 50 per cent vision in one eye and less in the other. Last summer she retired from janitor work at Whitewater state teachers college after 26 years. "Sees" for HuHband She has described hundreds of things for her husband things which he never had seen when he had sight. "An airplane," he says "is like a big bird sailing along with a propellor turning like a windmill." Some things, . like trees and birds, Wagner can re call. His wife said she had always been willing to describe things to him "everything but pretty girls." . They have three grown chil dren. One son is principal of Nor wich, Conn., academy; the other son is assistant superintendent of schools at west Haven, Conn Their daughter lives at Flint Mich. .The Wagners have three grandsons and three granddaugh ters. Wagner and his wife revealed the secret of their long and hap py marriage on their golden wed' ding anniversary day. Mrs. Wag. ner said, "Whatever he says, I say 'yes'." Wagner, enjoying one of the early warm spring days, said, "Whenever we had an argument, I went for a walk."
