Scholarship Awards Made
At State PEO Convention

awards made by the PEO Sister

ner meeting last night, which
brought to a close the first day
of the organization's state con
vention now in session in Red
mond. Meridith Rae Goodrich, Baker,
was named for the $450 Veda
Jones scholarship to Cottey jun
ior college. Four Oregon scholar
ships, of $125 each, will go to
Emma Louise Redbird, Ashland;
Jo Ann Louise Frady, Milwaukie;
Marie Maude Howard, John Day,
and Emily Jane Knecht, Vida.
Mrs. Irving G. Smith, Portland,
chairman of the scholarship com
mittee, made the report. Others
on the scholarship committee are
Mrs. Harry Miller. Lebanon, and
Pythian Sisters

Initiation of nine Knights of
; Pythias, by the Pythian Sisters
lodge, was a highlight of a meet
f ing of the women's lodge last
Thursday, night in the library
I. auditorium. The impressive init-
iation followed a potluck dinner
attended by about 60 members of
the two lodges and their wives

The degree staff, headed by
Mrs. Fred Gibson, was in charge
of the initiation ritual. Men who

Preceding a no-hostess lunch

guild, a memorial hour was held
from 11 a. m. until noon at the
Community Presbyterian church.
Chapter C, Portland, and Chap
ter D, Forest Grove, were in
charge.
Mrs. Kathryn Harris, Portland,
played the piano prelude and the
postlude. The devotions were
read by Mrs. Ella Hutchins. Mrs.
Maxine Banks, Salem, played two
numbers on the harp, "By Ben
damere's Stream" and "London
derry Air." Mrs. Maude Sestak
gave the memorial reading, and
Mrs. Jennie Price read the candle-lighting
ceremony. She was
assisted by Mrs. Lera Dunsmore
and Mrs. Banks. Mrs. Frances
Smith, Portland, sang "The Lord's
Prayer," by Mallott. She was ac
companied by Mrs. Doris Nes
telle. The benediction was given
by Mrs. Ella Hutchins.
Registration was held Mon
day morning from 9 tto 11 at the
Jenie Hill school. Coffee was
served by the Presbyterian guild
members.
Delegates and visitors who ar
rived Sunday were entertained
inlormally that evening at the
home of Mrs. L. W. Franks.
AFFAIR IS POSTPONED
Officers of Women of the
Moose today announced postpone
ment of a dinner planned for
Thursday, June 23, honoring fath
ers who are members of Loyal
Order of the Moose. Instead, the
affair will be a potluck supper
following the meeting of the
men's lodge June 30.
HEALTH GROUP TO MEET
The annual meeting of the Des
chutes County Tuberculosis and
Health association will be held
Saturday at 1 p.m. In the Pine
Tavern. Mrs. Saidie Orr Dunbar,
executive secretary of the Ore

Glen Vista .
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Danison
Jr., have returned from a honey
moon spent at mountain resorts,
and are at home on Route 2, in
the Glen Vista district. Mrs. Dan
ison is the former Arlene Chaney,
who was graduated from Bend
high school with the class of
1943.
The marriage took place Sun
day, June 12, on the lawn at the
home of the bride's parents, Mr.
arid Mrs. Ben Chaney. Rev. Len
B. Fishback, of First Christian
church, Bend, performed the
ceremony.
For the wedding, the bride wore
an aqua gabardine suit, with
white and brown accessories and
a white carnation coi-sage.
Mrs. C. E. Fullerton, sister of
the bride, was matron of honor.
She wore a green and white suit
with while accessories. Miss Mar
garee Loudermilk, of Bend, was
bridesmaid, in an aqua suit with
white accessories.
Tom Danison, Alfalfa, acted as
best man for his brother.
An informal reception followed
the rites. Miss Mary Ann. Kiesow
served the bride's cake and Miss
Betty Koth served the groom's
cake. Miss Betty Dudley poured
the punch. About 50 guests were
present.
Mrs., Richard Smith of Venice,
Calif., was an out-of-town guest.
The bridegroom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Danison,
Alfalfa.

Bend Women Go
To Convention
In Klamath
A delegation of local women re
turned this past week end from
Klamath Falls, where they at
tended the thirty-third annual de
partment convention of the US
WV auxiliary. Two were elected
to state offices. They are Mrs. L.
M. Lancaster, who was re-elected
senior vice-president, and Mrs.
Chris Kostol, who was named as
one of the department colors. Al
so attending from Bend were
Mrs. George Miller and Mrs.
George Erickson. '
Also of local interest was the
elevation of Mrs. Bessie Sutton,
Corvallis, to the office of depart
ment patriotic instructor. Mrs.
Sutton is the daughter of Mrs. R.
T. Forrest, 1036 Harmon, Bend. -
Mrs. Addie May Beeman, Port
land, was reelected president of
the auxiliary.
New commander of the United
Spanish War Veterans, depart
ment of Oregon, is Alfred Hari
man, Portland. The veterans end
the auxiliary held their conven
tions simultaneously. Sessions
opened last Wednesday and ex
tended through Saturday.

Rim Rock Riders
Guests at Ranch;
Program Varied
Just short of 100 persons at
tended the Rim Rock Riders' an
nual buckaroo breakfast Sunday
ut which Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hol
linshead were hosts. As in past
years, the breakfast was at the
Tlmbev'.inc ranch, near the north
bose of Lava butte. The meal was
served in rangeland style, over
outdoor stoves, with members of
the club and visitors "assisting
about the trees" in preparing and
serving the sumptuous breakfast.
Something new was added to
the program this year, with
couples gathering for square
dances on a green lawn. Bill Bur
ton called the quadrilles, with
music received over a public ad
dress system.
A horse show followed the
breakfast and dancing, with A.L.
O. Schueler, K. C. Gulick and
Harvey Jenkins as judges. Rib
bons were awarded winners. Mr.
and Mrs. Hollinshead joined with
others in showing some of their
prized horses.
Ideal weather prevailed for the
breakfast, with first arrivals
showing up around 7:30.
This was the sixth annual
breakfast sponsored for the Rim
Rock Riders by Mr. and Mrs. Hol
linshead. Lady Elks will have a social
evening Thursday in the BPOE
hall, beginning at 8 o'clock. The
affair will honor the women's
drill team, who placed first in
slate competition recently, it has
been announced.

Is Gala Affair
A "Mirror Pond" theme was
carried out in decorations and
favors for the installation and
charter presentation banquet of
the Bend Toast mist ress club, last
night in the Pilot Butte inn Blue
room. Present at the semi-formal
affair were some 75 persons, in
cluding members of the club and
their husbands, membei-s of the
local loastmislress club, and vis
itors from out-of-town.
The charter was presented by
Mrs. L. W. Wlrenius, Albany, a
director ol Toastmistress Clubs
International. Officers were In
stalled by Mrs. George Goodrich,
retiring representative of the
Tillamook club.
Officers Installed

clude Mrs. David Wilson, presi
dent; Mrs. Walter Emard, vice
president; Mrs. Floyd Neff, sec
letary; Miss Kathryn Kcliey,
treasurer, and Mrs. Craig Coy

dred Ringo, Vepresentatlve ol the
Tillamook club, whose topic was
"Project: Toastmistress," and
Vance T. Coyner; of the Bend
Toastmasters club, who spoke on
"Toastmasters" Goal." The third
of the five-minute talks was giv
en by Miss Kathryn Kelley, of
the Bend club, who spoke on
"History of Mirror Pond."
Mrs. Howard Cox presided as
toastmistress, and Mrs. W. F.
Andrews was topic mistress. Mrs.
W. E. Parson was timekeeper,
and Miss Amanda Anderson, a
speech teacher in the Salem
schools, acted as evaluator.
Mrs. Coyner in Charge
Mrs. Coyner, who served as
temporary chairman .while the
club was being organized, was
in charge of the program. The
invocation was given by Mrs. Ted
Mark, and Mrs. J. A. Dudley led
in the pledge to the flag. Don P.
Pence entertaindd with a tenor
solo.
Greetings were extended by
Don Peoples, president of the
Bend Toast masters club, who
was accompanied by Mrs. Peo
ples, and Thomas A. Power, pres
ident of the Madras club, who
was accompanied by Mrs. Power.
Setting the theme for the ban
quet was a replica of Mirror
pond, arranged on a small table
near the speakers' table. Minia
ture swans sailed on a blue mir
ror, which was edged with a
garden of moss and rock plants.
Favors at each place were minia
ture swan vases, and larger
swans, placed along the tables,
held flower arrangements.

Family Reunion
Is Held Sunday
At Corkett Home
The home of Mr. and Mrs.
Churles Corkett, 654 Roanoke,
was the scene o a Father's day
reunion on Sunday.
Present from out-of-town were
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Corkett and
three children, from Azusa, Calif.,
and Mr. and Mrs. Varnel Corkett
and daughter, Portland. Bend per
sons attending were Mr. and Mrs.
Clyde Corkett and Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Corkett and their three
children.
Charles, Earl and Varnel are
sons of Clyde Corkett, who came
to Bend in 1911 from Minneapolis,
Minn. He established Bend's first
ice-cream factory and candy kit
chen, which he operated In con
nection with a restaurant and
confectionery store.
The serving of a ham dinner
was a feature of the family gath
ering Sunday.
HOSTESSES NAMED
Mrs. Merle Sleeper will act as
chairman of the hostess commit
tee for the regular weekly lunch
eon of the Women's Golf club
this Friday at the Country club.
The luncheon will be served at 1
p.m., following a putting tourna
ment which is scheduled to start
at 8 a.m. Assisting Mrs. Sleeper
as hostesses will be Mrs. Howard
Coulee, Mrs. G. A. Horstkotte,
Mrs. Ray Forrest and Mrs. Regis
de Maleissye.

SWIMMING
The pool opening is tentatively
set for the last of this week. The
grand opening sponsored by the
junior chamber of commerce is
set for the afternoon of July 4.
Free lessons sponsored by the
Red Cross and the Bend recrea
tion department will begin on
July 11. Classes will be held for
beginners, intermediates, swim
mers, and in junior and senior
lifesaving. Registration for the
classes is now open, and can be
done at the Red Cross office, Har
mon or Allen playfleids, or the
recreation office.
DAY CAMPS
Because of the inclement weath
er we are discontinuing our
schedule. Any child from 7 to 14
years old, who has registered,
may go on any day of his own
choosing. Registration is still
open. Transportation leaves Allen
and Harmon playgrounds at 8:30
and returns at 5 o'clock.
JUNIOR OLYMPICS
The Bend Junior Olympics will
be held Saturday, June 25, on the
Bend high school field at 10
o'clock. Those 12 to 17 years old
are eligible to enter. Winners will
be given an opportunity to parti
cipate in the Oregon Junior Olym
pics held in Portland on August
6. No advance registration is nec
essary. JUNIOR SOFTBALL
There will be a meeting In the
city hall Wednesday evening at
7:30 of all boys interested in play
