Unknowns Lead In Golf Play Chicago, June 11 U" One of 15 golf stars, barring a complete blowup, will be the new National Open golf champion tonight, and the chances are 50-50 that even the most avid links fans won't know much about the new title' holder. It's been a field day for the long-shots in two days of play,. covering half the distance of the 72 hole open test of the par 71, 6981 yard Medinah Country club number three course. And al though 51 players will match strokes today, it appeared that none except the top 15 had much chance for the title. Even Al Brosch, the 37-year-old Garden City, N.Y., golf teacher who was in first place midway through the match with a one-under-par 141, was little known outside New York City. There he had some acclaim because he is the defending champion of the Long Island open and three times he has won. the Metropoli tan PGA championship. ., , . White Is Second ' But this winter 'Brosch made I the winter professional- tour and failed to make expenses. One" stroke behind him were deadlocked Buck White, a Green wood, Miss., pro, whose fame also has been local, and Dr. Cary Middlecoff, the Memphis dentist who has won a reputation since he dropped his extractors three years' ago to turn pro. He was the closest of the "name" golf ers to the title. At 143, two strokes off the Brosch pace, Claude Harmon, Mamaroneck, N.Y., who won the Masters' last year,Clayton Heaf ner, Charlotte, N.C, and obscure Les Kennedy, Pawtucket, ;. R.I., were even while Pete Cooper, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., stood alone at 144. ' Grouped In the next two brack ets were Ellsworth Vines, dark horse Bob Harris, the N.C.A.A. champion last year, and South Africa's Bobby Locke, at 145, while Ralph Guldahl, Bobby Dalles Golf Team Plays Here Sunday A 30-man golf team from The Dalles will invade . the Bend course Sunday morning, for the first match of a home-and-home Series. Feller as 'Wonder Pitcher' New York, June 11 'iPi Onto the pedestal of fame left vacant by the fading of Bobby Feller to day stepped big Vic Raschi of the New York Yankees base ball's new "wonder pitcher." A strapping 215-pounder with a rare combination of control and power, Raschi is the owner of the best pitching record in the majors nine victories and only one loss. Only three times in 11 starts has he fulled to finish, and one of those was an extra-inning game. Rasclti really looked like base ball's "bigman" yesterday when he racked up his ninth win by 3 to 2 over Cleveland, because It was a mighty big game for the Yankees. The New York entry had droo ped four straight games (since Rasehl's last start) and folks were starting to say that the oft predicted Yankee collapse had started. Gutting Knrly Start But yesterday was Rasehl's pitching turn again, and he made II plain that New York will not have many long losing streaks while he's around. The Yanks teed off for two runs in the first Inning to knock out Gene Bear don on Phil Riz.uto's double, Gene Woodling's single and steal, and Yogi Ilerra's single. Three singles and a force netted another run in the fourth. Raschi almcst nailed down his fourth shutout but, with two out in the ninth, the Indians scored twice on a walk. Larry Dony's triple, aiid Joe Gordon's single. However, Iou Houdreau grounded out lo end the game. In another American league night game, the Chicago White Sox made wise use of four hits to beat the Boston Red Sox, 4 to 2. In Chicago. But the Pastora team in Venezuela, for wnicn ne is playing, is said to be demand ing $10,000 for his release . . . and you would have to be an other Trls Speaker to bring that much from Branch Rickey. Violations Charged The National Collegiate Athle tic association is moving slowly in its investigation of supposed violators of the "sanity code." Its first report showed 28 vio lators and 11 doubtful schools. That's a total of 39; which means that 39 schools have been inves tigated. What's the matter with such teams as the Cleveland Indians and the Pittsburgh Pirates which have been disappointments this season? Eddie Dyer blames it on "anaesthetic ball players." "They're the kind you expect to perform and then they don't live up to their records while you are lulled to sleep," he said. . Conservation corner: Kids will be kids, so those at the Willow Grove, Mo., grammar school wanted to know whether there is a bird which can fly back wards and Whether a poisonous snake can poison itself. The ans wer is. yes on both counts. The humming bird can look where it's coming from. The New York Zoo has a record of a rattler which killed itself with its own bite. Dodgers Use Machine The Brooklyn Dodgers' use a machine to serve up the ball in batting practice during spring training. Which caused Fresno Thompson, farm system director, to remark: "Now If we can get a batting machine we won't have to carry any players at all." After a long, intensive search the 19th Century bicycle racing stars association has located the grave of Jimmy Michael, one of bike racing's all-time greats. Michael, a Welshman, died aboard ship in 1904 while en route to the United States for an exhibition. He was buried in a Brooklyn cemetery. Tomorrow the old timers will gather for memorial services at which A bronze plaque will be unveiled. Just about an absolute neces sity for any well run home Is a new transparent plastic case for autographed baseballs . . . you might call it a "must" for screw balls. Joe Louis seems to agree with the public impression that neither Joe Walcott nor Lzzard Charles can win their heavyweight cham pionship bout June 22. Seattle Win Streak Broken By Angels San Francisco. June 11 u Guy Fletcher, Seattle's grumpy righthander, had his sensational 12-game winning streak broken yesterday by a guy named Joe. Joe Damato, a pinch runner for Los Angeles catcher Eddie Ma lone, stole home with the bases full on iletcher in the ninth inning to score the run that beat the veteran hurler, 3-2. The run Damato brought to the plate also snapped a Seattle winning streak at eight games. Fletcher had good reason to be grumpy about losing last night's ; game as he allowed only eight hits ; and the Rainiers left 10 men j stranded on the paths, in addition to aiding L,os Angeles .n making a triple play. Acorns Win Oakland and Sacramento put on another 3-2 battle, with the Acorns winning in the bottom of the ninth when -pitcher Earl Jones topped off his three-hit pitching by doubling in the win ning run. Hollywood took advantage of Seattle loss to build their league leading margin to seven and a half games as they beat San Diego 5-3. And the Portland Beavers supported Roy Helscr's six-hit pitching with a power at tack that net them a 9-1 win over the San Francisco Seals. Red Lynn, second of three Los Angeles pitchers, got the decision over Fletcher. Tom Noill hom ered for the Suds and Clarence Maddern for the Angels, neither blow coming with anyone on base. Most of Portland's nine runs were unearned, although they got 12 hits off Elmer Singleton and Kenny Gables in beating the Seals. The Seal fielders con tributed four errors to the Port land cause. Beaver catcher Eddie Fernandas hit his first homer of the year off Singleton in the sixth. Helscr, who pitched fine ball through most of the game, lost his shutout in the ninth on three walks and an infield out.
