Escaped Convict
Finally Taken
Bakersfield, Calif., June 9 HP-
Escaped convict Lavern Speer,
23, who unknowingly toted
around a trunkful of high ex
plosives, was reunited with his
brother, Gerald, 28, in a cell of
the county jail today.
Still cocky, the young desper
ado was recaptured near here on
an underworld tip after abandon
ing a dynamite-laden stolen car.
He was searching for a "girl
friend" who turned him and his
brother in for robbing a Bakers-
field house of prostitution.
Speer had threatened to get
the girl. He Vowed he would nev
er be taken alive. However, when
he was seized at a swank motel
here, the two-time loser was un
armed and surrendered without a
struggle.
"I got nothing to say," he com
mented. The two brothers strong-armed
their way to freedom Monday,
overpowering two deputies who
were taking them to San Quen
tin prison. They returned to
Bakersfield where Gerald was re
captured Tuesday while lurking
in the shrubbery around the
county courthouse.
Later, Lavern stole an ollwork
er's car with 50 pounds of dyna
mite locked in the rear trunk and
abandoned it yesterday near his
parents' home in Bakersfield.
Sheriff John Loustalot prom
ised that Gerald and Lavern, who
has seven successful breaks to
his credit since he began a life
of crime at 14, would not have
another chance to escape. He
said the pair will face charges
of kidnaping, assault with a
deadly weapon and escape before
they again head for San Quentin
to serve the robbery sentence.
