War Veteran
Benjamin, a hero of world war

The couple had registered at

Mrs. Pfelffer told detectives
that Benjamin went to a Chris

of "illicit love."
He was moody when he re
turned, she said.
Once he picked up a whiskey
bottle . and screamed: "This
scotch Is driving me crazy.1
He hurled the bottle against a
wall, smashing it.
She said that for three hours
he talked about the futility of
life. Then he suddenly snatched
up a pistol and shot himself.
Mrs. picitler said she picked
up the pistol and tried to kill her
self but missed.
Mrs. Pfelffer was booked be

Washington, June 6 lit Three
west coast maritime unions vio
lated the Taft-Hartley act
through intimidation and vio
lence during a two-month strike
in Oregon, a national labor rela
tions board trial examiner ruled.
Unless contested, the exam
iner recommendations that the
unions be required to cease ille
gal activities will become an or
der of the NLRB. The order
could be enforced In court by
contempt proceedings If neces
sary! The unions cited by Examiner
Charles W. Schneider were the
National Union of Marine Cooks
and Stewards, CIO; Pacific Coast
Marine Firemen, Oilers, Water
tenders and Wipers association.
Independent, and local 12 of the
International Longshoremen's
and Warehousemen s union, CfO.
Accused of Violence
They were accused of picket
line violence in a strike last Au
gust at a mill of the Irwin-Lyons
Lumber Co., at Coos Bay.
The dispute arose over union
representation of crew members
on a new ship operated by the
company. The company signed a
contract with the ail bailors
Union of the Pacific.
The striking unions wore ac
cused of setting up a barricade at
one gate of the plant, attempting
lo overturn automobiles of em
ployes, stoning and clubbing au
tomobiles of employes; and as
saulting workers who attempted
to enter the mill.
The examiner recommended
dismissal of discrimination and
secondary boycott charges
against the unions, lie recom
mended also that charges against
the parent International Long
shoremen's unlon be dismissed
for lack of evidence that it par
ticipated in the acts of its local 12.
Stocks Again
Suffer Break
New York, June 6 (IP Stocks
dropped around $1,500,000,000 to
day to a new low for more than
two years in one of the busiest
sessions of 1949.
Today's break carried pivotal
issues down 1 to more than 2
points with a long list of special
ties losing as much as 3 and 4
points or more. Starting the cur
rent decline three weeks ago, the
market has now lost about $5.
000,000,000 since May 17.
industrial and railroad shares
were hardest hit today, reaching
back to new lows since late in
May, 1947, while utility stocks
o f f e r in g stiff er resistance
reached a new low since only
February this year.
Wall street attributed today's
weakness to virtually the same
set of factors that has been be
hind each selling movement In
recent weeks; the apparent stale
mate at the Paris Big Four meet
ing; the darkening economic pic
ture throughout the world, par
ticularly in Britain, and declining
Industrial production in the
United States. '
Another cause of uncertainty Is
the recurring rumor that Britain
is about to devalue the pound
ster-ing, a rumor that persists in
the face of the most emphatic de
nials in official quarters. The lat
est talk is that devaluation is in
evitable as a much-needed prop
to declining British exports.
