Thirty-four active members of the association were present for the session largest attended conven tion In the history of the associa tion. Roscburg and Newherg, west of the mountains, were also rep resented. Willis Scofield, Roseburg, state president of the Oregon slar route mall carriers, presided at the con ference, and touched on plans for the national convention of the as sociation, to be held In Pittsburgh this year. Plans for the Oregon state convention at Silver Creek falls state park also were dis cussed. The tentative dute for this convention has been set for August 7. Legislation Discussed Discussed at the Bend confer ence was the'recent congressional legislation granting permanent tenure and pay increases to star route carriers, aeolield discussed this legislation, and also touched on the work of the association's Washington representative, Frank Russell. . The delegates held morning and afternon sessions, with time out for dinner. Arrangements for the Bend meeting were made by Guy Dur ham, Bend star carrier. Durham, who has carried the mail for 35 years, has one of the longest routes In the state and covers more than 300 miles daily. Russian Roulette Has Tragic End Port Angeles, Wash , May JC ilh Three teen-aged Seattle youths, bored with target shoot ing Sunday, started a game of Russian roulette. Burton Bay, 19, inserted one cartridge in his .22 caliber pistol, twirled the chamber and pluced the muzzle to his right temple. He won. The hammer clicked on an emp ty chamber. Once aeain he spun the cham ber and again there was only the metallic ciick or hte hammer when he pulled the trigger. Bay tried it a third time. He lost. Under sheriff Howard Breece reported the pistol fired and a bullet pierced the youth's skull. He was rushed to Hay and Dav ison hospital where he died shortly after his arrival. Cloudburst Hits ' Camp Creek Area A cloudburst that hit the Hamp ton butte highlands to the south sent a roaring flood of water down Camp creek, in southern Crook county, this past week end, Dominique Verges, operator of the large "96" ranch, reported when in Bend today.' - ' Bridges were washed away and crops were damaged. Camp creek slashed hew channels, 12 feet deep in places, .through the "96"' ranch meadows. Full extent of the dam age has not yet been delermlnedr Verges said. Heaviest loss will be to crops, including a large field of rye that was still partly under water this morning. ' The cloudburst sent a big head of water down Camp creek from the highlands, but farm buildings, on the Valley bottom, were not damaged, Bridges washed cway Included a cement structure. ' ' Torrential rains lilt the range country .adjacent to the' "96" ranch. Verges was riding range in the Buck creek area when the storm hit, Friday afternoon. . Clearing weather was general over Central Oregon today, fol lowing nearly a week of electrical storms. Bend's precipitation for the storm was light, only .16 of an inch. TWICK IN SAME DAY Prinevllle, May 16 Friends the past several days have been tendering felicitations to Mrs. Steve Yuncey, pioneer stock ranch matron, on having become a great grandmother twice on the same day. On last Friday a son was born at Seattle to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Erickson. The mother was the former Joan Yancey of Prinevllle. On the same day a boy was born at the Prinevllle general hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Don Yancey. The Chinook count was 5,766 fish in contrast to 21,205 in April, 1948, and 83.520 for April, 1947. The steelhead count this year was i 3,285 fish. The run of Chinook salmon dur ing May is improving with ap proximately 4,000 Chinook climb ing the flshways daily. Fishermen said it was possible the run was late in entering the Columbia, Macaroni, spaghetti or egg noodles are made and used in every country where whAt is grown.
