You talk to the Reds about al-' most anything and ' you get a good straight answer. They real ize their pennant chances depend on a staggering number of "ifs" and they tell you so. But mention Blackwell, and they clam up. Their eyes narrow and take on a haunted look. . In no time at all you get the idea that Blackwell Is paying a price for growing and going too far too fast. Still Slim The six foot, six Inch thin man nf the Rprte rtnpsn't lnnlc unnrl He .still is about 10 pounds un derweight as result of an opera tion last January, for removal of a kidney. Spread 180 pounds over that distance and it doesn't come out very thick. He is wan and his eyes lack lustre and you can almost feel the wonder in his heart. fc He still has shoulder trouble and the tipoff is, that while he professes to feel strong and both ered only by wildness, Blackwell has thrown only two competitive innings with the season almost a month old. And, in triose two innings, he was forced to throw 53 pitches as the Pirates belted him for four runs. ' There, was. a ;time they. Wouldn't get that marly off him in two weeKs. .. ? Tragic Point " It is a tragic point in what kould have been a terrific career. Blackwell showed his promise in 1946 When, back from service, he won nine against 13 losses and led the league in shutouts. But in 1947 it really looked as though he might be one of the best of all time. He won 22, in cluding a no-hit, no-run game; pitched the most complete games; had the most strikeouts, and set Prineville. Height, 10 feet 9 inch es. He will represent Bend in th pole vault at the state meet in Corval lis May 20 and 21. . a modern National league record by winning 16 in a row. . . Then came 1948 and disaster. Blackle won'only seven against nine defeats and had a dismal earned run average of 4.53. The reason was that a shoulder muscle kept jumping out of place. Even discounting that kidney operation, he still is afraid of that shoulder muscle. It is a combination which has all the portents of a pitching tragedy. YAKIMA HOLDS LEAD (ByUnltl Pr The surprising Yakima Bears continued to reign over the West ern International league Wednes day opening up a commanding two game margin by edging Bremerton, 3-2, while runner-up Salem bowed to Victoria, 11-15. The third-place Biuejackets col lected a total of five hits off Yak ima hurling and just fell short of tying the contest in tne eighth. Trailing, 1-3, Bremerton tried to get a rally going. Cleveland Hard Hit by Injuries New York, May 12 ill') No mat ter what happens to the world champion Cleveland Indians this season, it looks as if they're going to owe a lot to arnica, adhesive tape and Al Benton. . The patched-up champs, who are being plagued mainly with in juries to their vital pitching staff, came through wth their biggest victory of the season to date last night, beating the league leading New York Yankees. 3 to 2, with relief pitcher Benton in the star ring role. Ace right hander Bpb Lemon, who was shooting for his fourth victory, retired after pitching to one batter because he had injured a back muscle. Although he is not expected to be out more than a few days he joins a casualty list In which pitcher Gene Bearden has a "sciatic pull in his leg"; Bob Feller still has a kink in his shoul der, and Satchel Paige seems to be suffering from the infirmities of age. In Second Spot Benton held the Yankees to five hits for seven innings before go ing out for a pinch hitter. With the score tied at 2-all, the Indians scored the winning run in the seventh on singles by Dale Mitch ell and Mickey Vernon and a wild pitch by Bob Porterfield. The vic tory put Cleveland into second, 3 Vi games behind New York. The astounding Senators won their ninth straight victory, a 14 hit 11 to 1 blasting of the Tigers at Detroit. The White Sox defeated the sagging Red Sox, 12 to 8. scoring in every' inning at Chicago as rookie Gus Zernlal set a 15-hit batting pace with a triple, double, Freak Baseball Features Contests in Coast League San Francisco, May 12 Ul'i. Alan Hide may not have the strangest name in the Pacific Coast league, but he could be the luckiest pitcher If you listen to Lloyd Kittle and Bob Gillespie. Ihde pitched only one and a third Innings against San Diego last night and got credit for a win. Gillespie pitched a two-hitter and Hittle a four hitter aw) what did they get a loss. Gillespie let San Francisco have a pair of singles, and nothing else, but he was the losing pitcher (n a 10 vlctoray of the Seals over the Sacramento Solons. Hittle pitched and single. The Browns, with Jack Graham delivering the winning run on his third hit of the night, defeated the Athletics, 5 to 4, at St. Louis. Rookie Bill Werle of Pittsburgh held, the Dodgers to seven hits, five of which he gave up in the last two innings as he turned In a 5 to 3 victory in Brooklyn, Lefty Warren Spahn won his fourth game and his second shut out for the Braves, blanking the Cardinals, 7 to 0, on three hits. The Cubs defeated the Phils at Philadelphia, 4 to 2 in a pitching battle in which relief man Emil Kusli was credited with his third victory. for Oakland and met Seattle's Guy Fletcher In another 10 duel, and lost. All Ihde did was go in relief for the Los Angeles Angels against the San Diego Padres. The Angels came from behind for him with a seven-run filth inning in a slam-happy ball game 12-10 and Ihde was the winner. Beavers Lose Again In the league"s only other game the Hollywood Stars won, even if it took then? 12 innings to down the Portland Beavers by an 8-6 score. Hollywood's win fattened their lead to two and a halt games as they pushed across a pair of tal lies in tne top oi tne van to even their series with the cellar-residing Beavers. Gillespie was the night's hard luck pitcher. He gave the Seals only two singles, but they Used a walk, a sacrafice, a 'single and a squeeze bunt for the winning run. Al Lien held the Solons to eight hits. In Seattle it was strictly a pitch ers' duel. Neither allowed an earn ed run, but Seattle got one on the house and emerged victorious. Hittle gave up four hits, but Fletcher handed Oakland only a trio of safeties. In- the San Diego-Los Angeles contest it was almost homer-or-nO' count.
