THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON THORSDAY, MAY 12,1949 PAGE SIX Red Federation Of Trade Unions Plans New Drive By Lyle C. Wilson (United Prats Staff Corrfflpondent) Washington, May 12 (U'l The anti-American world federation of trade unions, for which the late Sidney Hillman stood sponsor here, is organizing today another assault upon just about every thing this country holds dear. This Moscow-managed perform ance will take place publicly in Rome on June 29. On that date the world federation (WFTU) will hold its second world congress under the presidency of Guiseppe Di Vittorio, boss of the Italian general federation of labor. Watching. over the Italian's shoul der to see that all goes well will be WFTU's general secretary, Louis Saillant, a Frenchman who rarely is out of step with the com munist party line. Mohcow Inspired The WFTU is a Moscow device designed to obtain communist con trol over the world labor move ment and, ultimately, to establish its authority to the extent that it could pull world-wide strikes in any industry for political pur poses. It is a vital part of the com munisVi world revolutionary ma chinery. Pending the revolution and the time when it can girdle the world with a strike call, th WFTU has busied itself obstruct ing the foreign policy of the west ern powers and supporting the policies of Soviet Russia. Gullibility Shown With a gullibility which did not distinguish his operations in the feld of our own domestc politics, Hillman led the CK into the WFTU in October 1945 with loud cheers and expressions of confi dence. The American Federation of Labor tabbed the WFTU from the start as a communist front, and poorly disguised at that. So did some of the American press. But Hillman had his fling at try ing to cooperate with the commies and he died too soon to know that he had made a serious blunder. Last January under the leader ship of James B. Carey, the CIO pulled out of the WFTU, claiming Glen Vista Club (OPEN 6 NIGHTS A WEEK) A Pleasant Place to DINE DANCE Chef ANN ZUBAR'S famous cooking Mickey's Muslo RELAX S'2 Miles North on Old Itedimmd Highway Columbia Valley Plan Defended Washington, May 12 M') Rep. Henry Jackson, D., Wash., today defended the proposed Columbia valley authority as an agency that would be friendly both to business and labor. "CVA would be authorized to cooperate with business, but not compete with It," Jackson said in a stutement. "The Tennessee val ley authority has widespread sup port from business men after 15 years of experience with it." He said CVA bill provisions re garding labor are "more liberal than those contained in the TVA and Bonneville power administra tion laws." Penny Breakfasts! Los Angeles, May 12 HP) Two price warring drugstores served breakfasts for a penny apiece to day. The war began a week ago when one drug store opened across a busy street Intersection from the other in the Westchester district. Price cuts on some 50 items followed, hitting the one cent breakfast bottom yesterday. Storemanagors Tom Carpenter and T. Z. Mays kept shuttling back and forth across the street, checking each other's prices and cutting their own. Both said they were being back ed "to the limit" by the chains which own their stores. - Grange Hall Club Names Officers Grange Hall, May 12 (Special) Mrs. Walter Prichard was elected chairman of the Eastern Star ex tension unit, succeeding Mrs. Lyle Carrington, at the regular meet ing held last week at the home of Mrs. John Franks in Bend, Other officers elected are Mrs. F. If you don't, you're not. That is the state of affairs at Franklin Institute here. The institute put on the largest collection of illusions on earth to prove that illusions are normal, and fun. There was an uphill goldfish bowl, a room that tilted the rest of the world crazlly, a stationary automoDiie mat moved and iroses that were there, only weren't. Or you could watch a talking head with no body to support It or a motionless flag appearing to wave. Psychologists estimate that 20 per cent of the population is 11- lusion-ouna and can t recognize them. If one sees an illusion it proves normalcy. It's time to worry when one doesn't see them. The Illusions at the institute were baffling, until they were ex plained. It was puzzling to pass your hand through a pot of roses and never touch a rose. They weren't in the pot. They were behind it. It was ridiculously easy to under stand, once it was explained. Mirrors. The same explanation disclosed the secret of the talking head, the trick seen at nearly every side show. The body belonging to the head was cleverly concealed in a glass case. The tilted room dropped your stomach down to your knees. Its 13-degree angle made a goldfish bowl suspended from the celling look like as though it were hang ing uphilL Your body tried to stand verti cal to the earth but your eyes tried to tell your mind that the room was vertical. Later you got used to the idea and were able to. stand without leaning dangerous ly. But when you walked out of the room the rest of the world was tilted. MOTORISTS CITED Robert D. Horner, Bend, has been cited to appear in munici pal court on a charge of operat ing a car while in possession of a void driver's license. James E. Jones, Klamath Falls, was ar rested on a charge of operating a car equipped with an inade quate muffler.
