end of the war, where she distrib
uted books to men of the armed
forces at 18 stations. She finds
rural people have about the same
tastes as city dwellers.
Leone Mann, Clatsop county
bookmobile librarian, finds that
books on handicraft are popular
in her area.

use of a bookmobile not only
spreads more culture to the ,
outlying communities, b u t

Brown saws that, after the
initial purchase price, Des-'
chutes county Is distributing '
136,000 books by bookmobile
at a cost of only $250 a year
for maintenance.
The only counties with bookmo
biles at present are Clackamas,
Clatsop, Deschutes, Klamath,
Multnomah and Tillamook. In
contrast North Carolina has 72

A medium-size bookmobile
the type used in Oregon costs
around $4,000. It carries an aver
age of 1,200 to 1,800 books, al
though Klamath county's smaller
job carries only 800. '
The bookmobile sends out ad
vance notice about when and
where It is going to stop and the
length of -time -- half an hour
or 40 minutes. All those in the
surrounding oountryside come to
the site, select their new books
and return their old ones. Then
the traveling library moves on to
the next location. 1

Mrs. King hopes Coos county

Improper Labels
On Furs Opposed
Washington, May 12 0P It's
high time fur coat makers are
required to call a rabbit a rabbit
and a skunk a skunk, the federal
trade commission said today.'
The commission's views on the
fur labeling situation were pre
sented to a house interstate com
merce sub-committee by Henrv
Miller, director of the bureau of
trade practice conferences. .
Rabbit fur is sold under more
than SO names, none of which call
It rabbit, Miller said. Among the
names are Arctic seal, beaverette,
marmetine, hudseal, chapchillas,
visonette and muskratine. .
Skunk, he said, is called just
about everything but skunk. It's
referred to as dipped marten,
black marten, Alaska sable and
sometimes even civet cat
Plain old muskrat is sold as
Hudson seal, brook mink, water
mink, river sable, hudsonia and
so forth. , ,
The use of such names, he said,
makes it easy to deceive the con
sumer and places the reputable
manufacturer and merchant at a
disadvantage in meeting competi
tion of less scruplous business
rivals.
