PAGE TWO THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON WEDNESDAY. MAY 11, 1949 Washington Senators Still Amazing Big League Fans . By Carl Lundquist . . .. f (United Press Snorts Writer) New York, May 11 (EE) in this new major league season as the sudden rise of the sup posedly atrocious Washington Senators, who have won eight straight games and threaten to keep it up. They even have owner Clark Griffith and Manager Joey Kuhel baffled as to what has brought about their amazing reversal of form. . Griffith, taking note of the Senators have hit 22 homers, more than any other club in : the majors except the New York Giants, said "we've got a real power laden club all right -how if we just had a little pitching," . Defense Good Kuhel, an amateur magician, who is suspected of having em ployed his legerdemain In the cur rent winning streak, took a little different view of the club's poten tialities. "We're not going to roll over ; and play dead for anybody," he said. "We've got plenty of pitch ; ing and a good defense, -it we can just start hitting." So pity the poor fans and other experts who try to figure out why a club so well backed for ; the lower second division should ' lie playing great ball when even , the owner and manager can't de cide what makes it click. Yesterday there wasn't any doubt about why they won. Little Mickey Haefner, pitching in near freezing weather beat the world champion Indians, 1 to 0, with a one-hit performance,; the best of his big league career. The Drowns finally ended a 10' came losing streak, waiting until the last of the ninth to put over a 2 to l victory against the Red Sox. The Yankees made the most of six hits to defeat the Tigers, 6 to 1 at Detroit and increase their American league lead to four full games. - :- j . -; s . At Chicago, the Athletics beat the. White Sox in a night game, 5 toO. ; . . All National league games were postponed because of rain. Tournament Scores Listed i Central Oregon entrants In the . annual Northwest Women's bowl . Sport Parade New York, May 11 U'i Vince roster, a white-skinned young' ster out of Omaha who looks like a Juvenile Mickey Walker, was plainly conscious today that he was in the boxing doghouse. Foster was hailed as the game's new "Golden Boy" last January after he kayoed tough Tony m lone, a rough house fighter who never had been flattened. They compared him then to such mast ers of mayhem as Jack Dempsey, Ace Hudkins, Billy Petrolle and Rocky Graziano. Speedily he was matched for a February bout with Charley i usari. Friday night, three months and one assault charge later, Foster finally gets around to that fight. . . Part Indian In the meantime, the alleged young Bible student who faces a paternity rap is behaving like a chastised but still truculent child. But nobody in his entrourage will guarantee that Foster, who is part Indian, and fights like he was part panther, won't hit the primrose path again once his cur rent difficulties are solved. Jack Hurley, who handled Pe trolle, the old "Fargo Express," admits as much about his 22-year- old welterweight sensation. He got started wrong, ex plained Hurley. "He was just a kid when he started fighting. Aft er the fights all the kids would go to. some joint .o drink and dance. I guess it's the Indian in him. They all like that firewater. Under Close Guard "Now he's all right, because I watch him all the time," the Chi. cago thin man added. "Except in Chicago, that Is. After all, he's married, and I can't sleep with mm." Foster, a blocky, handsome youngster with even white teeth and a real fighter's broad square chinned face, was putting on his trunks as Hurley talked. Two photographers asked the kid to pose, reading his Bible and he re fused. , "You sit there and let them take all they want," Hurley reprimand ed. "Your lucky they want to waste a plate on you." Foster picked up the book, shot a dark side look at Hurley and posed. Then he muttered to his trainer: . , . . "People will think I'm making fun of the Bible. This doesn't have anything to do with fight ing." ; 1 Prineville High Nine Selected Prineville, May 11 Dick Burg er, coach of the newly organized Crook county high school base ball team, which has scheduled games with other Central Oregon schools between now and the close of the spring term, has announced his complete lineup as follows: George Campbell, catcher; Ron nie Jones, pitcher; Doug Johnson TO $2,428 LESS TO BUY riP Onlij Unp Car irlth High. San Francisco, May 11 (IF) The ban Diego padres gained an other rung in the Pacific coast league ladder last night and nar rowed the league lead held by the Hollywood Stars to one and a half games. While the Stars were taking it on the chin from the lagging Portland Beavers, 6 to 5, the Padres were warming up 7-3 on the Los Angeles Angels, who skidded two notches into seventh place. The Padres threw a tough com. bination at the Seraphs. Lanky Jess Flores, the Mexican fire bailer, looked a cinch to better his 1948 record of 11 wins and 19 losses as he marked up his sixth win against one loss in the cur rent campaign. The other half of the one-two punch was provided by Max West who pushed his home run total to 15 by swatting two grandstand pitches off Hurl er Lee Anthony. Rainiers Win At Seattle the Rainiers edged the Oakland Acorns 3-2 In what proved to be ' the night's most unique coast league game. Oak pitcher Frank Nelson went in to relieve Tom Seats in the last of the ninth with the score tied and the bases loaded. The winning run walked across the plate when Nelson nicked pinch-hltter Tom Neil with the curve that failed to break. Oakland's two tallies also were helped along by wildness. Char ley Schanz hit two of the Oak batters in the eighth and Lees Scarcella got on by an error, loading the bases. Catcher Don Padgett slashed out a line-single to drive in the two counters. In San Francisco the Seals managed to keep one jump ahead of the Sacramento Solons and won out 5-2. Steve Nagy, Seal p 1 1 c n e r, finished nis ninth straight game and set his record at five wins and four losses. Nagy had trouble keeping . the ball in the right places,' beaning out-fielder Ralph Hodgins In the second inning. .
