Referendum Due
Salem, May 2 UP) A -petition
for referendum of the daylight
saving time bill passed by the re
cent .legislature was filed witn
the secretary of state's office. here
today.
If 15,926 valid signatures to the
petition are obtained by July 15, ,
the meaure will be voted on by
the people at the general elec
tion in November, 1950.
That means that Portland and
other cities now on daylight sav
ing time can continue on the fast
time without interruption for the
remainder of the summer.
The daylight law passed by the
legislature specified that only the
governor should . nave authority
to declare daylight savins time.
and then only in the event similar
time was adopted by Washington
and California. The law was
passed after Portland voters bal
loted in favor of daylight time.

In mid-July,, as it would have
without the referendum petition,
state law would have superseded
local ordinance, and Portland and
other towns on daylight time
would have had to revert to stan
dard time.
