FACES NARCOTICS CHARGE
Portland, April 27 dl'i Federal
agents today held Vera Thomas,
44, on a narcotics charge after
police seized opium valued at
$9,600 In a Portland raid.
Capl, William Browne, chief of
detectives, said 24 ounces of pre
pared smoking opium was taken
from the woman and from her
bank safety deposit box.
Browne said it was one of the
largest .amounts of opium confis
cated here, in recent years and
said other arrests were expected
to follow. . ' .

hopes grew for a speedy settle
ment of the Berlin problem. Sen
timent, also, was bolstered by
good earnings, particularly those
of U. S. Steel Corp., and Ihe in
creased dividend declared by "big
steel."
The 20-year' high in March
quarter earnings reported by U.
S. Steel after yesterday's close
led Wall street to anticipate a
good report from directors of
Bethlehem Steel, who meet to
morrow, after the close.
Along with the favorable re
port of ' U. S. Steel, there has
been released recently favorable
earnings statements by Sludeba
ker, American Brake Shoe, Allls
Chalmers and Jones & Laughlin

At the close gains in the steel
