PAGE TWO FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1949 Bowling Big Guns of Coast League Open Fire on foe A Other; Padres, Rainiers Split, BUI Sail .Francisco, Aprii 22 (UPli-The big guns of the Pacific Coast league, the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Rainiers, turned their power on each other last night and came out with a draw. ' . ; "V.t The Rainiera clouted 14 hits in the opened of their double header to take an 8-3 decision, but the Padres equalized the euort wim an u-nn -a win in the second game. ; Elsewhere in the league Lob Angeles got excellent pitching again to defeat San Francisco 7-2 ; Oakland got excellent hit ting again to defeat Holly wood 8-8, while Portland and bacramento got rained out. In the . Seattle doubleheader southpaw Herb Karpel ran his record to 4-0 by giving the Padres only six hits in the seven-inning opener. One of the hits was a two- run homer' by Harvey Storey. Nell. Sheridan and Tom NeiU hit four-baggers for the Rainiers. In the second game Seattle could tret only six hits 'while San Diego hung the first defeat of the .season on bespectacled Charley Sehanz, who took a 4-0 record into the game. Carlsen Win A rain : Don Carlsen, recently acqalred by the Los Angeles Angels-from the parent Chicago Cubs, won his . third victory by limiting San Franelsco to five hits. Both Seal runs were unearned and came alt er Los Angeles had Knocked out Jack Brewer for four first-inning runs. Relief man Elmer Singleton pitched a fine game until the ninth, but the Seals were having too much trouble with Carlsen to hero him out much. Slnileton truck out ' nine Angels in his eight and two-thirds inning relief stmt. : The Oakland Oaks almost gave their game away to Hollywood by .committing three errors, but, put on ' a "five-run ninth inning to break a 3-all tie and win the game for relief pitcher Charles uassa 'way.' When the Oaks got five of their 15 hits in the ninth and the game was au but over.. ;' First Solit The- teams now move around for the first of the year's split weeks. Hollywood i goes on the road to play the San Francisco Seals in San Francisco and Los Angeles comes home to entertain Oakland.
