FRIDAY, APRIL 1 5, 1 949 THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON By Elizabeth Toomey (United frau Ui( Currcpondcnt) New York tlB-All famous mod els aren't . curvaceous- lovelies carrying hatboxes. There is also the broad-shouldered type with a brief case." Male models somehow don't at tract the publicity that the hat box set gets. They don't, it seems, even get as much money for their work. . Erik Blythe is currently the top example of the men who grin successfully for-the toothpaste companies and look satisfactorily soulful in the hand lotion adver tisements. He's making a very tiding liv ing at it, but not as much as the top cover girls get They are paid $20 an Hour for their time. Erik gets $15 an hour. It may well be the qnly case In the land of men getting paid less than women in equal work, - Coats. Girls More , ' Erik has no complaints. - He doesn't feel his sex. is being dis criminated against. - ' : "The girls have to invest so much more in their wardrobes to be successful models," he ex plained, "It's only fair, that they get paid more." His own ward robe consists of .about two dozen suits, which he claims are all very conservative. ft Neckties; f e ifcbout the most important part of a male model's equipment. That's where . the brief casetcomes in. Erik carries an extra shirt, usually white, and several spare neckties along with him. In consideration for the con servative American husband, the neckties usually have diagonal stripes. ' , The first time Erik ever turned on famous grin for a catalog company Jie had no intention of turning Into a full-time model. He just needed a little extra cash un til he- could' get an acting job. ' "I suppose I. had a very natu ral smile," he said modestly. "And I was pretty thin, because I'd been Jiving on hot dogs and or ange ; Juice, ' so 'I photograph well".,. . ..,fl Makes Big Hit ': He was a smash hit in the cata log circles. Before long he was grinning happily out of almost every magazine. He held a pipe and looked like an outdoor man to sell tweeds. . Or he donned white tie and tails and looked like a slightly bored, but definitely in triguing, man of society.' The white tie and tail pictures, Incidentally are favorites- with the male- models. They get paid $25 an hour for posing in them. A tuxedo ' shot brings $22.50 an bout. ' - "Srik won't give his exact age, though ;hls. years of experience put hiriiin the thirtyish class. But he Say a male model's career span cart beNmuch longer than a girl's. The line's around the eyes . and the slightly grayed temples only add distinction. -' Weight is something slse again. Erik is over six feet tall, Jui.t he's learned not to lose his appealing lean look, Right now he weighs In at a lanky 155. WRINGER ROLLS b fit any Washer! NEA Telephoto Fireplace, Candles A d vised For Dinner, to Inspire Love New York iib - It's 'probably true .that the way - to - a . man's heart is through his esophagus, but if a. woman's souffles burn and her biscuits" become base balls, she needn't despair. - For -even if she can't cook the way- his mother does,' there's still a good chance to stimulate love at first bite; All it takes is a .little planning and thoughtfulness. Or so claims suave, genial JLou Simon, a three-college man who made.the Fireside Inn one of New York's popular restaurants on the premise that love goes with lamb chops, romance with roast beef and wooing with wienerschnitzel. Simon's restaurant Is divided into five candle-lit rooms. Each has a fireplace and there are spe cial corners for newlyweds, fian- Lower Bridge Has Livestock. Mass., April .15 UP A Westover field soldier and his wife, desperately hunting an apartment for themselves, and their three children, found one only to hear the landlord ask: "Do you have any children?" They tearfully .told him their children ' were in the cemetery. They got the apartment. Then they drove to the ceme tery, picked up the children who had been waiting for them, and returned to their new home. He said women must "never, never" forget that "the dinner hour is the hour of Intimacy." He also contended that more engage ments are made and more tender words spoken at the dinner hour than at any other time of day. He said that even after mar riage "dinner should and could retain its aura of romance." "Good cooking alone doesn't make for a successful dinner," he said.' "A hungry man Isn't always too particular. If the food is pa latable, he'll eat it.",. - - Simon said he considered set ting and atmosphere to be as im portant as good food when it comes to making meals enjoy able. He said tables should always be set with candles, polished sil ver, and clean linen tablecloths an(l napkins. . Fireplace Desirable "A fireplace is desirable, too," he said.. "If one doesn't have a firpplace, a bit of art, whether it be a drape or painting, will do." Simon said he realized that aft er marriage it. would be difficult for wives to give so much atten tion to dinner. However, he sug gests that they make it a "must" at least twice a week. "It's the best way I know of to keep love alive," he said. -''Too many wives make dinner a rou tine meal. They forget all about romance. They come, to the table with their hair in' curlers and with their aprons un.. They set the taftle in the kitchen and serve from the cooking pots."
