Chase Osborn
Taken by Death
Poulan, Ga., April 12 Ui The
body of Chase Salmon Osborn,
famed "Sage of the Soo," leaves
his rustic Possum Poke winter re
treat here today to lie in state in
Michigan's capitol at Lansing,
where Osborn once served as gov
ernor. The 89-year-old philanthropist,
philosopher, author and adventur
er died here at 5:25 p.m. yester
day after five days of fighting
against pneumonia and heart
trouble.
Born Jan. 22, 1860 in Hunting
ton county, Ind., Osborn served as
governor of Michigan In the isil-
1913 term. Later he lost a race for
the U. S. senate but continued ac
tive In politics. He was a staunch
supporter of New York's Gov.
Thomas E. Dewey for the presi
dency. During his lifetime he acquired
and gave away two fortunes, esti
mated in the millions of dollars.
The money he made in iron min
ing and timber went out in grants
and gifts to charities, educational
institutions and needy individuals
according to his avowed creed of
"giving back whatever I did not
need to live on."
Forrestal Now
Convalescing
Washington, April 12 U'i-
medical officers believed
that rest and medical treatment
will bring about the recovery of
former Defense secretary James
Forrcstul who is suffering from
operational fatigue.
A bulletin from the Bethesda,
Md., naval medical center said
Forreslal's ailment "is directly
the result of excessive work dur
ing the war and postwar years." '
The former cabinet member
was admitted to the hospital April
2 for a "physical checkup."
(Radio commentator Drew
Pearson said in a Sunday broad
cast that Forrestal "is out of his
mind and apparently has been
partly so for some weeks.")
The hospital announced last
night that Forrestal's checkup
has been completed. It .said he
has lost 25 pounds In recent weeks
land, at the present time, "has a
marked low blood pressure, a sec
i ondary anemia, and a neuro-mus-i
ciilar weakness which is characer-
istically seen in states of exhaus
tion." Then, in apparent reference to
the Pearson report, the hospital
said:
"The only, psychiatric symp
toms present are those associated
with a state of excessive fatigue.
This clinical picture was very
common during the war years In
those members of the services
who were exposed to severely fa
tiguing conditions and was ordi
narily diagnosed 'operational fa
tigue.' "The physicians In charge of
his case anticipate that a period
of rest and medical treatment will
result in recovery."
