April 6 tin Th -golfing clan is gathered in Augus ta wis ween lor tne masters and the locker room lyricists might like to know that their chief sub jectWalter Hagen is in "ro bust" health again today after a rougn winter. riagen has been gone from com petitive golf for a numbor of years now. But wherever and whenever the golf gang gets' to- getner you can be certain that much of the conversation will be about the man they fondly call ine naig. , Maybe much of it is because of what he did for the pros. For nobody can doubt that it was Sir Walter who broke down the social barriers and gained en tree to the clubhouse for the men who make their living by hitting a ntue wnite ball. Certainly he was made for such a Job, for Hagen always was the old man river of self-enjoyment, a suavely boisterous man who play ed golf to live and not to make a living. Yet he was the first golfer to make a million and the first to spend It, Walter .won 55 major titles, including two U.S. opens, lour British opens and five P.U.A. championships. But he picked up more checks than any man of this time, threw more parties and spent more lor clothes. He liked to stand around and belt the old songs and the older vintages. And his personal phil osophy was: Don t hurry, don t worry. You 're here on a short visit so you might as well smell the flowers." Another, reason that the tales of his swashbuckling career con sume so many nostaligic hours on merry clubhouse evenings Is tnat tne stories are gay, and true. ' On one occasion. Sir Walter kept the' Duke of Windsor, once nis majesty, King iiuward vm, waiting 45 minues at the tee. And the match was hardly under way when Hagen prompted: "Take the pin. Eddie. I think I'm going to hole this one." ; "Eddie" did. so did Walter. The stories of Hagen are many, but all illustrate the ease and freedom he gave the game, the relaxed concentration which car ried him tq greatness and his suc cessful psychology. , At 57, Hagen now is opening his own golf club company In Grand Rapids, Mich.
