t THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 1949 ank Executive Absconds With 00 in Cash New York, March 31 UP) A grand larceny warrant was lssu ptl Wednesday for Richard H, Crowe, 41, $7,500-a-year executive of the National City bank who disappeared one day before $690, 000 in cash and negotiable bonds were discovered missing. Police of 13 states were asked to look for Crowe,, a prominent Staten island civic leader describ ed as "the white haired boy of the (National City bank) organ ization with a reputation beyond reproach." The missing funds included $190,000 in $5 and $10 bills, four negotiable $100,000 bonds and $100,000 in smaller ne gotiable bands. Returned fo Post Bank officials said Crowe re cently returned to his post as as sistant manager of a downtown Broadway branch bank after suf fering a nervous breakdown. They said he apparently took the money and securities from a bank vault before going home from work on Friday. The vault's lock was jammed so that the loss was not discovered until late Monday. All New York banks are closed Saturdays. An additional $100,000 In cash was left untouched in the vault. Crowe spent the week end with his wife and three children at his 11-room, six-acre Beachfront estate on Staten island. But late Sunday afternoon he- packed a suitcase and told his wife he had to "go to Buffalo on business." Me was last seen boarding a fer ry bound for New York. "My husband had been morose and upset for three or four months' Mrs. Crowe said. "He had been under treatment but was not getting any better. I be lieve his disappearance means that his illness has caused a men tal condition which made him not responsible." .'- Crowe had worked his way up in the bank from office boy to executive in 19 years.
