CENTRAL OREGON'S DAILY NEWSPAPER Solons, Rainiers, Seals Win first '49 Season Games 1 By Don Thackrey ' (Unitil Praia SrmrU Writer) San Francisco, March 31 tut The hitters- were 'way ahead of the pitchers as the Pacific Coast Baseball league got off to its 1949 start with Sacramento, Seattle and San Francisco getting wins nnd the weatherman decisioning Hollywood and San Diego. Seattle, pre-season favorite to win the crown, turned on a power attack to zoom past ixis Angeles 0-7 while Sacramento was dump ing Oakland 5-2 and San-Francisco edged Portland 7-6. Holly- wood anct &an uiego wound up in a 3-3 tie after seven innines. when rain forced the game, to be postponed. Sluggers Hit .: The sluggers banged out a to tal of 74 hits, including eight home runs to celebrate the open ing of the new season. Seattle picked up the most base knocks, teeing off on four Los Angeles pitchers lor l& sateties. The Rainiers trailed Los Ange les 7-1 going into the sixth inn ing, but home runs by Jackie Al bright and. Heinz Becker helped Seattle cop the game. Dom Dal lassandro and Johnny Ostrowski also homered for the Angels. ' Seals Score . The San Francisco Seals scored a run in the bottom of the' ninth inning when rookie Reno Cheso singled with the bases full to de feat Portland 7-6. Portland outhit the Seals 11-7, but a big fiftli Inning saw the Seals score five runs on three walks, three Portland errors and two singles to take the lead. Port land finally tied it in the top of the ninth, but couldn't hold- the home towners lit the final half inning. ' Stadium Dedicated In Sacramento big Joe Marty, Solon outfielder, helped dedicate the new stadium by blasting out a three-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Solons their winning margin over the defend ing champion Oakland Acorns. Manuel Salvo scattered , seven unn una, amiuugn ncr grtvc up-a- home run to Dario Lodigianijn the sixth. : , . The Hollywood S a n Diego game was' finally called at the end of seven Innings, after the teams had waited out two delays. The threp-all tie entered in the record books, with Pete Coscar art of San Diego and Dave Gor man of Hollywood getting credit for home runs. Approximately 3 2,112 fans turned out to see the two day games and the two night con tests. Sacramento drew the larg est crowd, 12,202 spectators. The teams continue hostilities today in the same parks with a day game scheduled in Los An geles and the other cities playing night baseball. . x WEDNESDAY'S BASEBALL RESULTS San Francisco 7, Portland 6.
