Rites Arranged For Cecil Reid Funeral services for Cecli Reld, Bend soldier who was killed in ac tion in Italy, in October, 1944, will be held Tuesday, April 5, in Max well, Nebraska. Burial will be in a military cemetery at North Platte, The soldier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Reld, formerly of Bend and now of Kennewick, Wash., two brothers, H. L. Reid and Gar old A. Reid and a sister, Mrs. Emll Dachtler, all of Bend, will leave tomorrow for Nebraska to attend the service. He is also survived by another brother, R. D. Reid, of Richland, Wash.? and two other sisters, Mrs. Chester Morrill, of Brooks-Scanlon camp, and Mrs. Robert D. Kelley, of Bend, Cecil entered the service in Jan, uary, 1944, and served with the Filth army m Italy. He attended Bend men school, and oetore en tering the service, was employed by Pacific Trallways as a driver. K. W. Biornstad To Receive Rites Funeral services for Kenneth W. Biornstad, 27, who was killed early Wednesday in a motorcycle accident, will be held from Car roll's funeral home in Gresham, it was announced today. Arrange ments had not been completed, but it was indicated the funeral will probably be Saturday., Mr. Biornstad was a native of Gresham. He is survived by his wue, colleen, and two children. Ila May and Linda Rae, of the Culver community. 'He also leaves nis motner, Mrs. Kva m. Biorn stad, four brothers, Robert James, Wilbur and John, and three sisters, Mrs. Norman Nor- quist, Katherlne Biornstad . and Rena Biornstad, all of Gresham.., Mr. Biornstad was a member of the IOOF lodge in Culver. Angel, Ore., was the top producing cow in state dairy herd improvement associations in 1948, H. P. Ewalt, Oregon State college extension dairy specialist, announced today. 'The Holstein produced 19,461 pounds of milk and. 763.2 pounds of butterfat. State averages are 5,900 pounds of milk and 266 pounds of butterfat. Ewalt reported that the Lane association had the highest coun ty average, 411.6 pounds of but terfat per cow. Averages for all 20 associations reporting were 7,952 pounds of milk and 368.8 pounds of butterfat. Remains of Two Soldiers Returned Included in remains of 1,147 Americans returned to the United States from the Pacific area today are tnose oi two ueschutes county men, Sgt. Sherwood B. Francis of the U. S. army and Cpl. John B. McClaln of the marines. Edna Watson, 1237 East Third street, is listed, as Sgt. Francis' next of kin. Mrs. Dorothy A. McClaln is listed as Cpl. McClain's next of Kin. The remains of the 1.147 Amer leans who lost their lives in the Pacific area of operations were re turned aboard an army transport. Armed forces dead interred in temporary military cemeteries in New Guinea and the Philippine islands are among those returned to this country. - NEW 1949 (UJTT ARE) TWO MEN ARRESTED Harry Miller, who gave his res idence as Ogden, Utah, and Charles Shepard, of El Paso, Tex., were held in jail here today on charges of theft of a car in Bend on Tuesday night. The car, own ed by Keith Shipmari, Bend, was found abandoned near Millican, where it. had gone Into a ditch. The two men, who have denied the theft, were picked up by state police, a short distance east of the abandoned car. , , . T 'NUBBINS HOFFMAN "DIES Cheyenne, Wyo., March 31 Ui- "Nubblns" Hoffman died today. The seven-year-old Cheyenne youngster who ilrew the interest of the nation with an "early Christmas" to outwit death in 1944, lost his five-year battle for life at his modest home, with only his mother, Mrs. Marshall Hoff man, present. He dfed without regaining con sciousness. The youngster had been in a coma, broken only by brief spells of consciousness, for the last four days. , TWO DRIVERS CITED Jack L. Ross, Bend, was arrest ed yesterday evening and charged with violation of the basic rule in operating a car. He assertedly passed a car in the South Third street underpass. Cecil R. Henry, Route 1, Bend, similar charge. Redmond Scouts Set Honor Court Session April 22 Redmond's Kiwanls club-sponsored Boy Scout committee, at a meeting held last Tuesday, set Friday, April 22, as the date for the troop s court of honor and parents' banquet. Earl Halleck. chairman of the committe, is in charge of the evening's ceremon ies which will begin at 6:15 with a pot luck banquet, and will in clude the awarding of many scout ranKs ana Daages to the Boy Scouts of Redmond. Dr. Charles Dudley, member of the committee, will be In charge of the awarding of the second class scout ranks. Scoutmaster Robert Maxwell will conduct the tenderfoot scout Investiire, while committeeman Ray Rogers will present the merit badges. Com mitteeman Darrel Palmer will award service stars to all scouts in troop 26 who have one year's service in scouting. To Make Award ' Kenneth E. Pearson, local field executive, will make the award of first class scout to three young men of Redmond. Also included in the evening's ceremonies will be the installation of the young men officers of the troop, conduct ed by Scoutmaster Maxwell and members of the committee. Howard Schroeder, . neighbor hood scout commissioner from Redmond, will present the den chief's shoulder cord to Scout Hod Wells for his Work as a leader in Cub Scout pack 26 of that city. Park to Be MC ; Master ' of ceremonies for the occasion will be committeeman Rupert Park of Redmond. The Modoc area council will pro vide a fine film on Camp Makual- la, the area's Boy Scout comp, for the education of the scout's par ents who will be Invited to the banquet and court. . . ' In keeping with the crusade now in progress nationally, the scouts of troop 26 will take an oath at this court of honor to "strengthen the arm of liberty." This ceremony win De conauctea by members of the district com mittee. After the regular meeting of the committee, to be held Monday eve ning, April 11, the names of all scouts receiving awards will be made public. Sterilized Mother Says 'All for Best' Los Angeles, March 31 (IP) Pudgy, 21-year-old Mrs. Georgette Brucks said today, it was "all for the best" that she was sterilized for killing her baby son in a fit of temper. Penniless and out of a job, Mrs. Brucks came home yesterday to a lonely room to recover from the operation which will keeD her from having any more children.
