The slim skirt will frequently be accented with slight back In terest or a slit. The jacket will be a trime cut-awav or softlv tall- orea witn Dockets flaring softly or jutting slightly. , . Some jackets will feature semi belted waistlines. Other, more dressy styles, will be embellished with buttons and beads. Double, shawl, .roll and even detachable cape collars will take a turn to ward the conservative In size. Box Suits Box jacket suits, a carry-over - from spring, 1948, will retain their popularity. This year, they will feature extr-,"teint flare, known ns "fly-away" backs, over straight skirts. Shoulders, although still following natural contours, will he slichtlv padded, y Wool gabardine will lead the way In suiting fabrics, with mens- wear worsted and sharkskin run nine closely behind in noDularitv. Suit colors, this, serine, are a drastic , departure from popular pastel snnues of the past. Thcv will be featured in : jacket "and skirt contrast motils, in small checks, glen plaids and mono tones. . The colors are muted, with the excention of a clear bright red wnicn has returned to the fashion scene. Favorites are skipper blue, navy, green, cinnamon and a warm toast tone. ; Fashions Coordinated Coming into ravor this sDrlng, . for the first time since pre-war davs, are coordinated fashions. Coordinated outfits may include a shirt, skirt, lacket. jersey and short combination. Smooth leathers, including calf and kid, will become Increasingly evident with the appearance of spring tweeds. . Colorful light weight leathers, patent leathers and suedes are forecast for dress-up- shoes. Linen shoes, dyed to coordinate with the costume will gain In popularity. Color is of extreme Importance In the spring shoe picture, with emphasis on the entire blue fam ily. Other colors to be seen are continental green as a contrast for browns, beiges and golden shades; cherry red for casual town cos tumes and for use as a pick-up ac cent; bronze for after five and burnt mocha, a lively brown. High color and reptile casuals replace the gold rush of last spring. A three-piece suit In grey all wool sharkskin, available at Penney's. Is modeled by Miss Bonnie Hoodenpyl. The suit, made on classic, becoming lines, has a new pocket treatment. The matching tailored coat fea tures a new deep turned-back cuff, button-fastened. The ac cessories Miss Hoodenpyl wore with the suit include a black corde bag and matching kid gloves. Her sling pumps are of black calf, and the hat Is black straw, with pink "cabbage" roses. Sleeves, this spring run from short to non existent. Many suits have "convertible" sleeves. This sleeve has a long, slit cuff which, turned back, bares the forearm; turned down, It forms a regular full-length sleeve. Many coats have either elbow length sleeves, or sleeves which can be pushed up to show the el bow. Some coats have only a shoulder cape for sleeves. Most daytime and after-five dresses have either the briefest cap sleeves or no sleeves at all. Let colored accessories make a high fashion costume out of your . good, year-round suit or dress. Try, for instance, avocado green gloves with navy. Avocado is a now warm olive green shade which combines effectively with many colors. Bags and shoes to match are also available In this color. (UA Dartmouth college will sponsor an Arctic re search expedition next summer. The 100-foot schooner Blue Dol phin, with a 15-man crew, will sail June 15, under command of David C. Nutt of Cleveland, Arc tic specialist of the Dartmouth museum. Now berthed at Gloucester, Mass., the Blue Dolphin is being put In shape to withstand the rig ors of its polar cruise. The object of the expedition Is to create "an awareness of the Arctic and its role In the world today."
