THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 1949 PAGE EIGHT Bahaman Islands Get Secret Vote For First Time Nassau, Bahamas IP The Ba haman Islands, last outpost of strict British imperialism, are soon to enjoy the secret ballot for the llrst time In history. When the house of assembly concludes a session now in oroe ress, Sir William Murphy, who succeeded the Duke of Windsor as governor general here, will call the election. It will give thou sands of "out island" natives, scattered over 70,000 square miles ol ocean, their initial opportunity to express their wishes at the polls without fear of criticism by their neighbors or reprisals by po litical factions. The island of New Providence, on which this winter vacation fairyland is located, has had the . secret ballot since 1941, but it is the only member of the group which has enjoyed the privilege even for that short time. No Socialism In more ways than one, the Bahamas stand out quite apart from other British colonial pos- sessions. Outstanding is their failure or, rather, refusal to go along with the socialistic poli cies of the mother government Although Sir William is the crown-appointed administ r a t o r, the Bahama house of assembly, created in 1728, is the absolute authority with respect to taxes, It has exercised that authority in a manner wholly incompatible witn nlgn-tax socialism. There are no income taxes in the Bahamas, nor is there any land tax. The islands depend chiefly upon import taxes and crown subsidies for governmental revenue. The handful of white people, who run the show, and the 80,000 odd natives who inhabit the is lands rely chiefly on the tourist trade mostly from the United States and on the export of pine apples and tomatoes for their live lihood. That excepts, of course, the many wealthy Americans and Britishers who have established their palatial homes in this haven from income taxes. . Season Starts Poorly This year the tourist traffic which centers in Nassau, got off to a bad start. During January Wood Steel Aluminum FREE ESTIMATES Bend Venetian Blind Mfg. Co. BS8 E. Mrs. Hess states that the garden clubs of Bend, Redmond, Powell Butte, Prineville and Madras have been assigned the task of supply ing 500 place cards for each of the various luncheon or banquet meetings. Mrs. Hess stated that she had written to Walter Meacham, exec utive secretary of Old Oregon Trails, Inc., and he had suggest ed a place card using the wagon wheel insignia oi tins organiza tion. normally, a good season there were many vacant rooms in Nas sau's luxurious hotels, and mer chants complained that business was considerably below expecta tlons. The Cunard White Star line lost money on its first three cruises of its luxury liner Maure tania, sailing from New York. The blame was laid to a combination of uncertain economic conditions in the U. S. plus the mild winter on the U. S. eastern seaboard from where most tourists come. But things are looking up now, The Royal Victoria, the British Colonial, and the Fort Montague, Nassau's leading hotels, are full at last and the cherished U. S. and Canadian dollars are flowing freely. Founds Unwanted Incidentally, while U. S. and Canadian dollars are graciously accepted and heartily welcomed, Nassau will have none of the pound notes of the mother coun try. British pounds are not even accepted for exchange at the banks. Nor can one spend British pounds on the Britain-owned Mau ritania even if you are a British citizen. Sir William and Lady Murphy are soon to follow the Duke and Duchess of Windsor into retire ment. They plan to leave soon after he has called the general election, which must take place before the hurricane season starts around July, so that the candi dates, all of whom live in Nas sau, can campaign in their constit uent out-islands. ; There has-been no hint of a successor to the Murphys. There are some who wish the Duke and Duchess would return and bring back the social glamour which surrounds them. But that is not considered likely.
