Stepping into the shoes of a man who just won a pennant Isn't considered a sure way to success. ' In fact usually you can't win. But little Charley. Dressen has taken over as manager ol the 1948 Pacific coast league cham pion Oakland Acorns and from all outward appearances he'll be lust as successful as was last . yean's- ' Casey Stengel, who got promoted to the New York Yanks where Dressen had been a coach. ; ' . Material Lacking Oh the surface. Dressen does n't -.have quite the material that Stengel worked with. And the chances are, little Charley won't be quite as free with owner Brick Laws' money as was Sten gel. But he may get results in a different way. : In cutting their pay-roll, which had taken on big league propor tions,i the 'Atoms during the win ter lopped off such high salaried talent as first baseman Nick Et ten, who hit 43 homers last year; catcher Ernie Lombard!, the for mer National league batting champion;. . centerf lelder Brooks Holder, arid others. ; "Martin Groomed i The lad. being groomed for star . dom is Billy (The Kid) Martin, a sensational 1948 rookie, who prob ably will be the infield spark on tnis years team. He piays secona base. The veteran Les Sacarsella will be at first; veteran Ray Ham- ricK at short and another old timer, Dario Lodiglani at third. The infield looks set and fairly solid. - The catching will be first class, Billy Raimondl, starting his 17th year in Acorn spangles, will share the backstop . duties with Don Padgett, down from the majors, Both are .300 hitters and Rai mondi is without a peer. In the receiving department. . Outfield Good ' The outfield looks pretty good, too yery good offensively, with . considerable room for improve ment defensively. Right now it stacks up as George Metkovich, who hit .336 last year; Loyd Christopher. .317, and Mel Dueza bou, .304. This trio committed 22 errors in' the outer garden last year, with Metkovich making 13 of these. The pitching should.- be : ade quate if the,, old-timers continue to come through.. Charley Gassa way, a 15-8 man last year, is back for more. Lou Tost, Ray Janikowski, Earl Jones, Ralph Buxton and Frank Nelson make up the top flight of the remain ing moundsmen. Jones, Tost and Buxton won 38 and lost 24 be tween them last year, while Nel sdn and Janikowski hurled else where. . . (Spec) Keene, but neither would comment on jwasnevsm s chances for the Beaver spot. Campus reports, however, men tioned Evashevski as the man most likely to succeed the veteran Stlner, Fans Welcome Hollywood Team (Br United Preu) The Hollywood Stars got warm welcome trom nometown followers today as they returned to Gilmore field for an exniDiuon game with the San Diego Padres. The Padres had their five-game winning streak stopped snort yes terday by the Seattle Ralniers, who caught fire in the ninth to give ban Diego a a to l iicwng at Ontario, Cal. Seattle was busy today with the Los Angeles police at Wilming ton, Cal under the watchful eye of Manager Jo-Jo White. Portland spent its second game- less day at their (Riverside, Cel., springs quarters with Manager Bill Sweeney scheduling light drills for all the squad. The San Francisco seals and Oakland Acorns traded yester day's opponents, the Seals tilting with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Oaks lining up against the St. Louis Browns. The Browns hopped on young Con Dempsey yesterday to drop San Francisco 2 to 1, making the clubs' two game series an even split. . Oakland suffered a similar fate at the hands of a rampaging Pitts burgh club. The Pirates took a 10 to 4 nignt victory. The Los Angeles Angels also had a major league opponent to day in the Chicago Cubs Bees who took the field against the Seraphs at Fullerton, Cal. The Angels came up with a 9 to 7 victory over the Sacramento Solons. - - COLLEGE BASKETBALL I - " (By United PreM) .'National invitation tournament at New York: . -. . Coach Pete Newell's west coast Dons provided the fifth major un set of the invitation event last night in the semifinals as they overcame Bowling Green s over whelming height advantage for a 49 to 39 triumph before' a crowd OI 18,301. : . And the rollicking Ramblers from Chicago proved once again that "as Kerris goes, so goes Loy ola," by rallying from a 10-point, first-half deficit to beat Bradley, 55 to 50, on a brilliant last-half EVANS we don't have Custom Built Rifle With custom stock, raised ramp, Lyman receiver Mauser action, perfectly finished.
