THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND,' OREGON WEDNESDAY.' MARCH 9,1 94? PAGE TWELVE r 24 12. pi (3. Displaced Doctors 's Galled Europe Geneva U More than 2,500 experienced doctors, many of them of the highest skills, are the "forgotten men" of Europe's dis placed persons camps, according to a survey made by the Interna tional Refugee organization. IRO said the proportion of doc tors to the population of the camps is one of the highest in the world. Countries which have clamored for agricultural and industrial workers among the DP's have turned a deaf ear to pleas to re settle medical men. The report says that virtually no resettle ment of doctors has taken place, "although people in many parts of the world desperately need medical care." Not Over-Age Nationalities of the doctors range from Bulgarians to Ukrain ians. At least two are former holders of Rockefeller medical fel lowships. Another is the author of over 70 medical publications. An IRO screening of the doctors by a board of competent medical men showed that 80 per cent of them are under 50 and 60 per cent under 45. Among those screened, 81 doctors have long teaching experience as professors or lecturers in 19 different special medical subjects. .. Dr. R. L. Coigny, IRO health director, said in the report that medical societies oppose immigra tion of doctors for fear of the low ering of medical standards or of professional competition. Needs Cited ."Medical standards would not suffer from admission of refugee doctors, most of whom are excel lently qualified, while standards in some countries might even be improved," Dr. Coigny said. "As forJcompetltlon, no country in the -'VHJrld has sufficient doctors to maintain the best possible level of health in all its areas." " The United States is the only countrv which has indirectlv en- couraged the medical mat). Its displaced persons act gives a pref erence to refugees "possessing special educational, scientific, technological or professional qual ifications." However, ' the U. S. has not stated the number of doc tors it will admit,. The few who have ' left the camps for other countries have had to disguise their professional status and pose' as mechanics and farmers, the reporf. reveals. A new anti-submarine destroy er of fthe navy .will be named. In honor of Admiral Maro Andrew Mitcher. ' ;'.N .-. , Realty Transfers ' Deeds, February 26 Verdo Fairchlld et ux to E. Americans in Turkey , Solve Duck Problem Ankara HP) American mem bers of the military aid mission to Turkey who . felt their duck shooting style cramped back home by game laws and bag lim its have found their hunter's para dise on Lake Emir near here. American fliers passed over the lake and saw its surface swarm ing with ducks and no hunters. The Turks considered the lake too remote and the dead ducks too hard to retrieve. The Americans solved the re trieving p.-oblem by using rubber pneumatic life rafts from their military planes. Then the ducks had' to face the latest secret weapon from the Americans' ar senal when gunners were station ed in a line, barrage fashion. A low-flying trainer plane was used literally to shoot the ducks Into the muzzles of the guns. The latest joke in Ankara Is that the Americans are eating so much duck they are afraid to open their mouths tor fear they will quack. Use classified ads in The Bulle tin for quick results.
