Callf..;(U1The armv ; has been wondering what sort of shape those new selectees are In, literally, and It Is finding out ine army aiso Is finding out what happens to the new recruit as he encounters army chow and tne pnysicai rigors of basic train one of five "anthropometric survey teams" from the army quartermaster board is making the tests at this sprawling reser vation, training center lor the ' Sixth army area plus parts of Texas, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. Like Fitting Shoe The team, headed by an ex- insurance man, Capt. E. R. Wright, d, lushing, N. Y., even brought 1 an anthropometer" with them, along with a lot of tape not the red but the measuring kind. The anthropometer is a sort of overgrown cousin of the thing a shoe salesman uses to measure a person's foot size. .So far, the team has measured more than 500 men, none of whom has had any previous mili tary experience. They expect to measure 12,000 men before they leave nere. A group of 50 men have begun to think the needle has stuck. They get measured every week to see what army life is doing to tnac pot oeuy or oroaa posterior. 14 Measurements Taken And the men get . measured from head to toe. Circumference of the head, neck, chest, waist, and measurements taken. Measurements are taken In the metric system, rather than In the familiar inches and feet, which is something of an innovation In the U. S. army, according to Capt. -Wright. Capt. Wright explained that the eight-man team is collecting only the "raw" data and that no con clusions are yet available. Re ports are forwarded to headquart ers daily for study. . Facilitation ol proper, design and fitting of jiniforms is one of the main practical purposes of the survey. It is thought that an eventual result may be a stand ard pattern for all army clothing.
