THURSDAY, MARpH 3. 1949 THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON PASE THIRTEEN Experts Discuss Future of Rocket Travel in Space " White Sands, N. M., Mar. 3 IP The altitude record of 250 miles set by a "two-stage" rocket travel ing at 5,000 miles an hour put mankind one scp neair the time when man-made satellites will be shot into outer space to circle the earth forever, experts say. The rocket, a German V-2 with a 700-pound "wac corporal" rock et in its warhead, was shot 250 'miles into the gky over the White Sands proving' ground and offi cials said "for all practical pur poses" it soared beyond - the earth's atmosphere. . Record Doubled - . Actually, both the speed and al- . titude records were set by the "wac corporal" rocket. It was shot from the mother rocket at an un- ' disclosed height and soared up into, the heavens until it reached an altitude of 250 miles. This was more than double the previous al titude record of 114 miles set by a V-2. It reached a top speed of 5,000 miles an hour before its fuel was exhausted and it fell back to the earth, officials said. MaJ. Geri. Henry R.- Sayler, army ordnance research chief, in Washington, said the rocket is a definite step toward launching man-made satellites. ' Conjecture Made "There has been much conjee-' ture as to a possible man-made satellite to circle the earth con tinuously," Sayler said. 'It must 'be admitted that this flight ' brings much closer the time when ' such a satellite could be launch ed. "I say 'could be' for I am not sure whether such a missile will ' ever be successful or serve a , useful purpose." ' Leading physicists say that a rocket would have to attain a ' speed of 25,000 miles per hour to ' escape the pull of the earth's gravity. Military experts have agreed New Orleans Doctor Says Lung Cancer M ay Disguise Itself at First as Influenza By William J. Fox (United rnu Sufi Compond.nt) t . Memphis, Tenn.,' March 3 iipC Lung cancer may disguise itself as influenza at first. Or. Alton Ochsner of IVew Orleans said I Ochsner, a cancer specialist who was Sen. Theodore G. Bilbo's sur geon before the Misslssippian's death, made his statement at the first annual National Cancer con ference, . Another prominent authority in dicated that the death-dealing mustard gas of world war I might possibly open a path to a cure for cancer. Opposing views were presented on the value of mass public X-rays to: detect cancer. "Lung cancer begins Insidious ly," Dr. Ochsner said. "Not infre quently it-starts out as what is thought to be Influenza. But in stead of getting well as he norm ally should, the patient continues to have a cough. ' "Any unexplained chest com plaint or discomfort in a man -past 40 means cancer of the lung until it is disproved. "The treatment is removal of the lung. Other methods of treat ment offer relief but no cure. "Following removal of the lung, our results show that almost half of the cases have a five-year cure rate." , - ', Dr. - Oschner said also that smoking causes 'lung cancer. - - - "I am not condemning smok ing," he said. ."But it is a factor responsible for the increasing in cidence of lung cancer." However, Dr.-Charles S. Cam eron, medical and scientific direc tor of the American Cancer so ciety, said that "for every man who says that smoking causes cancer,! there is anpther to say it doesn't" -. that the first nation to post satel lites in the heavens could rule the ' earth. And B' report from Washington a few weeks ago dis closed that experts were studying what secretary of defense James Forrestal called a "vehicular sat ellite program." . ,'. "Thn nnlnt has never been proV' en," he said. "It is purely in the ' Oh the X-ray survey conflict, rtr Thmvln F. Hllbuch of Wash ington said mass public chest X rays for cancer alone are "not economically feasible." But Dr. Richard H. uvernou oi urooiuine, Mass. said that early detection of lung cancer can be found by "mass X-ray screening of the adult population on an annual basis.' Dr. Alexander Haddow of Lon don's Royal Cancer hospital, made the mustard gas report recently. But he saw "no immediate prac tical value" in the clue he and other physicians traced. V Even the top scientists at tms meeting are frank to say they don't know the secret of what causes cancer. They do know the disease can be stopped if caught in time. From the welter of multi-syllable words and scientific terms at this conference, it can be said that cancer is caused In two ways by chemical and physical reac tion. . Excessive sunourn, tor instance, can cause skin cancer. This Is a chemical reaction. But, because of the long period it takes for the disease to appear-r-from 10 to 20years you may lie on a beach this summer and not discover can cer until I960. - Among other things which are known to cause cancer are all coal-tar products, over-exposure to radiation and anzo dyes, such as butter yellow. Experts said that asbestos, auto mobile exhausts, the-smoke of cities and certain road surfacings are "suspected!' of causing the malignancy. . Nylon may replace silk for some uses, but the same dye Is hot necessarily satisfactory for both materials. BEND OIL HEATING . EtortTiiiitiiiTt-hiiiriii-iiriWiifirii' Owners of the 1949 Cadillac are goitig to get a pleasant surprise when they take it out for that first cross country run. Without any extra effort whatsoever, they are going to wind up that first day's touring about a hundred miles farther from home than they expected to be! For here, beyond any doubt, is the greatest "mile-eater" that ever rolled over a highway. We are not talking about excessive speed -because, regardless of the power they have at their command, sensible people observe the laws of the road and the rules of safety. But the 1949 Cadillac is so cat-quick and eager so smooth White idewl urei available at additional coat. and easy and-effortless that it covers an amazing amount of distance inside the safe and legal limits. You take the hills as fast as the level stretches you make the first hundred yards away from a stop light as fast as you make the second hundred and the car's matchless agility enables you to avoid many of the pockets in slow moving traffic. The secret, of course, is found in the great new Cadillac V-type.engine plus the marvelous . new engineering in the Cadillac chassis. Actually, you almost seem to move by automatic propulsion. There is no performance like it anywhere in the world.
