THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 1949 THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND. OREGON Expert Forecasts Gradual Business Recession in US (Editor's Note. Rover Dabson, economist who predicted the slack market trash, foreraeu in Uie followint; dispatch a a-raii-us) business recession which won't hit hot torn until lS2.or J53, By Roger VV. Babson (Written for th United Preiui) Wpllesley Hills, Mass., Mar.- 3 (U'i People are again feeling pinched for money. : Competition in most industries Is .beginning to become trouble so'me. The supply lines are' get ting clogged with goods. The pub lic has used up a large portion of Its war savings. With many more concerns manufacturing all kinds of products and with many more people without available savings, The the "vicious circle" 'which caused the expansion is bound to work in reverse. This is due to tjair Isaac newran s law 01 action ana reacuon wnicn is us lunua mental in economics as in chem istry or physics. . On the other hand, I do not ex pect a sudden drop as occurred in ,1920-21, 1930-32 and in 1937. Instead of falling out of the 20th ? story window we will walk down "i stairs! This will be due to new inventions, unemployment insur ance, minimum wages, relaxed in stallment regulations, and more ' lilK'ial small loan operations', and to our tightly organized labor unions. A , Legislation Can Help No artificial or other legislation can prevent a red area of depres sion, from some time following the abnormal price boom which ,' we have enjoyed the past seven or eight years, but legislation can change the shape of such a de gressive area. Legislation can 'taper off the decline. . , : Hence, instead of saying that a "crash" is just ahead of us, as I preached in 1929 when there was : no "oxygen" or other drugs avail able in Washington, I now say we have started to "walk down stairs" and will not reach the Sisters Sisters, March 3 (Special) Friends have received word that Mr. and Mis. Washington's birth day set the theme for the table decorationsi and, refreshments. Games and refreshments were en- pavement until 1952 or 1953. ' Drugs Prolong Life ! Penicillin and . the sulfa drugs will prolong the age of old peo ple, but they do not prevent ulti mate death. The business of un dertakers is temporarily slowed up, but they sell exactly the same number of coffins per capita dur ing every business cycle. . There is nothing to worry aDout now. Both the employment tig- ures of the past few years and the unemployment figures now being published are 90 per cent political estimates and guesses put out by Washington'. But the business noneymoon is over and we should once more realize that we cannot loaf our way to prosperity. We must give more time and labor for a dollar of wages and profits. Joyed.
