PAGE EIGHT THE BEND BULLETIN", BEND, OREGON TUESDAY, MARCH 1,1949 US Fleet Returns From Maneuvers In Cold Weather San Francisco, Mar. 1 ttW .. More than 20,000 Bailors from 40 ships of the navy's first task fleet made liberty here Saturday after a montn of "minor cold weather , '. exercises" in the frigid gulf of Alaska. The vessels, which arrived here yesterday, ranged In size from the aircraft carrier U. S. S. Box . er down to small landing craft with vice Adm. Gerald F. Bogan commanding the operation from tne aircrait tender u. s. s. curt iss. Bogan said the purpose of "op eration M1COWEX" was to test the capabilities of equipment in sub-arctic conditions, it was simp ly a trainlntr exercKe, lie said "During' the last war we had a warm weather navy. We had a - lot to learn about Alaskan con ditlons, he explained. "Within the limitations of the force, the results were reason ably successful." Problems Exnhtlned . Bogan explained that the worst : problem facing his group was the weather, which was unpre dictable and varied. Flexibility of operations Is essential, lie said, , rather than operations set to oc cur at a specific time. . "We learned to wait for the weather, not to buck It,' he said The admiral also said that he was particularly pleased with the unity shown by the army anu navy under operational con ditions. Bogan added that the North American FJ-1 jet fighters and the navy's underwater demolition equipment performed in a satis factory manner in the cold. '-'One of the major problems en countered was the clearing of ice from carrier flight decks, he said. The possibility of Installing steam pipes under the flight deck, one of the cufes suggested, does 'not ' seem practical, he added. Bogan said rock salt, hot salt water and steam all were used with some success.
