Widespread Use
Of Benzedrine
Causes Sale Ban
Boise. Ida., Feb. 28 IB Wide
spread use of benzedrine as
stimulant for Illicit "teen-age par
ties" has caused a crack-down
on the sale of the drug in Idaho.
Stale pharmacy board secretary
J. J. Lynch announced that the
sale of benzedrine without doc
tors' prescriptions would be
banned.. :
Action Taken
The action came after Boise po
lice chief George Hasklns report
ed his officers had investigated
many parties at which "children
between 12 and 19 were drinking
soft drinks 'hopped up with ben
zedrine taken from common in
h ulators."
At the same time, Prison war
den L. K. Clapp reported "benze
drine Is being, smuggled Into the
prison for use by the prisoners
as a drug and the situutlon has
grown serious.
Mrs. Ethel Alloway, Boise po
licewoman, said "One Boise girl,
at a soft drink and aspirin party
was Riven some benzedrine by a
man, and told us she woke up two
days later at a friend's home, not
knowing how she got there."
Used by Youths
Hasklns and Mrs. Alloway said
the drug, a chemical compound,
was in common use by 'teen-agers
who "unable to buy whiskey, use
the drug mixed with soft drinks
to give them a thrill."
Clapp said prison inmates using
the'drug have "developed innum
erable ways of getting their
'kick' ' Some of them boll the
benzedrine soaked paper remov
ed from the inhalers to get the
drug. Others chew the paper to
get the full treatment. Others
cut tiny wounds on their arms or
other parts of their bodies and
cover them with the drug-filled
paper."
Lynch said that from now on
"any person wishing to buy ben
zedrine in any form, even In the
common inhaler, must have a
doctor's prescription. Any viola
tion of this will be treated as any
other drug law violation."

ASPIRES TO CROWN
Cincinnati, O., Feb. 28 tll'i Ez
zard Charles, the Cincinnati
clouter who aspires to the heavy
weight crown, was no better than
even money today as he put his
title hopes on the line against
Joey Maxim, the Cleveland cutle,
in the first fight to be held at
new Cincinnati Gardens.
A surprising lack' of money
backing Charles was noticeable
with most bookies and the fight
was quoted at 6 to 5, "take your

Today Less Money
Washington, Feb. 28 IP Less
money is floating around these
days.
At the same tlm's, government
figures show that Americans are
using their credit more than ever
before, despite complaints by sell
ers against the controversial
"regulation W" which places lim
its on installment buying.
Seasonally-adjusted figures on I
money in circulation have been
declining since November. Unad
justed figures showed a slight
rise In December because of
Christmas buying, but It was be
low normal.
Loans made by federal reserve
banks throughout the nation have
dropped steadily for the past five
weeks, mat does not mean, how
ever, that less money is being
borrowed by business firms and
Individuals.
Banks were required last Sep
tember to increase their reserves.
Therefore, they had to cut down
on the amount they were lending.
L.UC insurance companies, not
under such compulsion, immedi
ately began disposing of some of
tneir snort-term securities to pro
vide money to make loans pre
viously made by banks.
rne federal reserve system
said that money In circulation
outside of the United States
treasury and the federal reserve
banks was $27,50,uuo,uoo in Jan
uary. In December, it was $28.-
423,000,000 and the figure for
January, 1948, was $28,394,000,-
000.
These figures are nearly four
times as high as they were in
1939.
Consumer credit, which has
been one of the headaches of the
government for years, has been
splrallng steadily upward since
tne end oi world war II.
