FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1949 THE BEND .BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON PAGE yTH REE arshall Plan Should Continue Truman Declares , ' Washington, Tel). 25 ll'1- Pies ident T r u m a n tokl reporters Thursday that the Marshall plan should be continued until Euro pean recovery is assured. Mr. Truman at a news confer ence also said he was "Immense- ly gratified" by news of the ar mistice signed by Israel and : Egvpt. He expressed hope that Israel and the other states would follow "this pattern for peace.'" , ," Statement Made I Mr. Truman's statement on the Marshall plan came when re porters brought up a report made to the United Nations economic and social council Wednesday to the' effect that British economic recovery is nearly complete. The report was made to the council by Christopher P. May hew, British undersecretary of state. , Mr. Truman said he was happy to hear about the economic strides made by Great Britain, but that he thought the Marshall plan should be continued until European recovery is assured. Replies to Reporter This' was his reply to a reporter who wanted to know whether Mr. Truman thought that Marshall plan funds should still be "poured into" Great Britain in view of the strengthening British econom ic position. - Mr. Truman said later that if the British statement proved to be correct, Marshall plan aid might not have to be continued for the entire four years envision ed in the current program. The president said, however, that if it took four years to do the job, the Marshall plan would undoubtedly be continued for that time. Mr. Truman had two other ma jor announcements at his confer ence: ''1.- He is nominating Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, now assist ant secretary for air, to be under secretary of commerce. Whitney will succeed William C. Foster who resigned last spring to be come deputy enocomic recovery administrator. 2. He expressed hope that James Bruce, United States am bassador to Argentina, would re turn to his post in Buenos Aires. Bruce said after talking with the president that he would do any thing Mr. Truman asked of him. Use classified ads in The Bulle tin for quick results.
