Stocks Decline
For Third Time

New York. Feb. 24 (U-i Stocks
declined again today for the third
time this week, bringing the loss
since Monday to around $1,250,
000,000. Trading picked up on the sell-
off and reached a pace of almost
a million shares for a full session.
For the first four hours the total
was 680,000 shares against 510,
000 yesterday.

off by selling in the rails where
extreme losses ranged to more
than three points around mid
day. However, some of the lead
ing rails had moderate recoveries
belore the close.
Weakness in rail shares primar
ily reflected disclosure ol unfa
vorable January earnings, the di
rect result of the heavy snow
storm damage In the west and
loss of western freight traffic,
coupled with a sharply lower
number of coal car loadings In the
east where winter wealner has
been mild.
The situation In the railroad
Industry has been accentuated in
recent days by a growing number
ol temporary layolts in rail snops
and offices.
