Church Building
Plans Being Made
As part of an over-all building
program for St. Francis Catholic
church, a new rectory, to cost ap
proximately $38,000, will be con
structed this year, Rev. William
Coughlan has announced. It is
expected that work will start in
May or early June, with Seaton
H. Smith, who is preparing plans,
to call for bids by March 1. .
The new priests' residence, to
be of frame construction with
brick veneer, to match the church,
will be located south of the church
at the site of the present home,
which will be removed. When the
rectory is completed, brick work
on the church will be re-painted,
and the entire property will be re
landscaped. The building program began
this year with complete renova
tion of the parish hall, at a cost
of $2,500. New maple floors are
being laid, new flouresccnt lights
are being installed throughout,
and a new furnace and fan are be
ing installed. The kitchen is be
ing completely renovated, with
new lights, fresh paint, and in
stallation of new stoves and sink.
The interior of the hall has been!
re-decorated in white and pule!
green.
Rev. Coughlan added that very
likely the building program wiil
continue next year, with addition
of more classrooms at St. Francis
parochial school, and remodeling
of the Sisters' convent home
which faces Franklin avenue.
Work which was done this year
to Improve Ihe school property
cost s.i,tHKi, Kev. Coughlan said.
This included construction of a
playground, fencing, and pur
chase of new equipment.
The new rectory --will bo a two
story building 57 feet wide anil
31 feet deep. The ground floor
will include two reception rooms,
a guest bedroom for visiting
clergy, a dining room, kitchen and
housekeeper's quarters. The up
per floor will contain three bed
rooms with adjoining, studies for
Ihe parish priests, and a combin
ed living room and library.
The present parochial house,
which is occupied by Rev. Cough
lan and his assistant pastor. Rev.
Conleth Killian. was built in 191 1.
Construction of the new rectory
has been authorized by the Most
Rev. Leo F. Fahey, coadjutor
bishop of the Baker diocese.

Stocks Irregular
At Sessions End
New York, Feb. 11 illi The
stock list turned irregular today
at the close. Trading was a little
more active than in the previous
session.
Investment buying reappeared
and grew out of a widening belief
that 1949 will bring no Increase In
income taxes, despite White house
insistence on higher taxes.
In many instances early losses
were replaced with small gains.
In the rails there was an occa
sional good gainer, including
Central of New Jersey and Atlan
tic coast line.
Tomorrow the New York stock
and curb exchanges and all com
modity markets in the United
States will be closed in observ
ance of Lincoln's birthday. Cana
dian markets will operate normal
ly. Although the market finished
the day's trading and the week
on a somewhat firmer note, the
"big board" list of stocks had a
net loss on the week of around
$1,500,000,000. largely because of
sizeable breaks on Monday and
Thursday.
The United States navy has
slightly more than 4.000.000 fin
gerprints on file, dating hack to
1907.
