Freeze Leaves School Waterless Powell Butte, Feb. 5 --- In no Central Oregon community are residents greeting a return of the warmer west wind more heartily than the student body of the Pow ell Butte grade school, where as the result of a water system put out of commission by the pro tracted zero and near-zero temper atures it has been necessary to haul water in milk cans to supply the school's cafeteria, drinking fountains and wash rooms. Ranchers of the neighborhood, who had been forced to haul wa ter long distances for their stock because of a. freeze-up of domes tic water systems and the "freez ing dry" of stock ponds, have made it possible to keep the school open by also hauling the waler supply there. Klenlen (UP' Financial Wilier) New York, Feb. 5 dl'i-The stock market cracked 1 to more than 3 points today, losing more than a billion dollars in the widest decline since last Nov. 9. The break came on Ihe heels of a loss of around three quarter bil lion dollars Friday. '1 'rading quickened as prices went down and hit the fastest pace for any Saturday since Nov. 6 last vcar, at 790,000 shares, against 300,000 last week. Wall Street traced the selling today n nervousness among in vestors and professional traders brought about by weakness in commodity markets, the decline in wholesale food prices and the disclosure that unemployment has risen hy 2,000,000 since De cember, although still substan tially above Ihe level of a year The break in prices yesterday came about when directors of Creole Petroleum Corp. cut the dividend to 75 cents a share from 90 cents and called attention to "reduced demand", for crude and ihe accumulation of stocks of petroleum products. In most Wall Slreet quarters it was pointed out that the small stockholder has turned extreme ly cautious because of the turn in commodities and the indica tions of further price reductions in consumer goods lines, but thai at the same time such major lines as steel production and au tomobile manufacture still are holding up well.
