Horsemen's Society Backing
Bill in Sfate Legislature
By Ralph Wutson
State House, Salem, Feb. 2
The horses came galloping into
the legislature this week when
Representative C. L. Lletiallen ol

out what the United Horsemen's
Society of Oregon want to do to '
boost the horse breeding industr The bill gives both the horses
in the state on the one hand and and the dogs a 00 day lacing lie
to fatten up the state and county iriod, w hich may overlap or run
fairs on the other
The Lleuallen hill boosts the
"take" which is the state's share
of the net proceeds from the horse
and dog race meets from 12' a to
15 per cent of the income from
various meets held in the state un-
tier the control of the slate racing
; commission.
This percentage Increase will
mean a boost of approximately
$S3,000 in the racing funds turn-
: mo ,ue 8lai treasury during
1917. and will mean an additional
$3,500 in revenue allocated to the
Oregon state fair and each of the
county fairs of the stale. During
the 1947-19 biennitim the total rev
enue turned Into the state from
the racing meets aggregated $1,
201,123, of which $400,000 was
transferred to the general fund
tjos o i-eyenue division from
those now in the law. Under the
new bill the state gets 4 per cent
of the first $00,000 taken; 5 per
cent of the second $07,000; H per
cent of the next $07,000, and 8 per
cent of all above $200,1)00, or an
average increase of 33 1, 3 per
cent.
The operators of the race meets
are given an increase of 15 'i per
cent of the first $00,000 taken;
17' per cent of the first $07,000;
20 per cent of the second $07,000,
and a decrease of 0 23 per cent
on all revenues above $200,000.
