Fuel Shortages Noted in Oregon Portland, Ore., Jan. 27 IW The current Pacllic, northwest coin weather is partially responsible for producing a shortage of iriost types bf fuel, especially sawdust, it was disclosed here Wednesday. Bill Alexander, manager of the Oregon Fuel Merchants associa tion, said the sawdust shortage was acute but that supplies ol coal and gas in western Oregon appeared ample to meet all needs. He suld a "son" lumber market has lowered stocks of wood fuel but that it generally was avail able. In eastern Oregon where coal Is more generally used than w'est of the Cascades the supplies were dwindling and rail shipments were slowing down, according to dealers. At La Grande dealers said they were down to a two days' supply. Most coal used in eastern Oregon comes from Utah with Wyoming and Colorado sup plying some. Alexander blamed consumers to a large extent for the sawdust shortage. He said most consum ers had insufficient storage space or neglected to "stock up" during the summer months when sup plies were at a peak. There are in the United States some 217,000 miles of primary highways which must be kept clear ofi snow, and in addition many miles of secondary roads and city streets. 1 cfh North Carolina is said to be the only state which is technically out of debt.
