Hopper Plague
Feared for Some
Sections in '49

grasshopper plague is expected
to descend on many sections ot
the country this year to attack
crops and grasslands.
At the present lime, every
thing points to the worst," the
agriculture department said.
"Grasshoppers by the billions are
expected."
Alarm Sounded
The department sounded the
alarm online basis ol surveys re
cently completed by departinenl
grasshopper experts. The survey
snowed that severe outbreaks
may occur in scattered areas in
Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois
and most states west of the Mis
sissippl, except the lar northwest.

expected to be especially severe in
the major grasshopper bed
stretching from eastern Montana
southeastward into Texas. The
belt runs through . eastern sec
tions of Wyoming and Colorado
and western sections of South Dlt
kola, Nebraska and Kansas.
Control Hoped
The department said there still
is hope that natural control fac

able weapon will have to be
thrown into the fight against the
grasshoppers.
'Hoppers have been increasing

Sections Infested
Irrigated sections have become
infested with the pests in Utah,
Arizona, New Mexico and Califor
nia. Egg beds of a single species
cover more than 100,000 aieas in
northwestern Nevada anil nearby
areas ol Oregon and Calilornia.
This species was said to have
reached areas of crop cultivation
only recently, after migrating
from central Nevada, where it
caused little agricultural damage.
There are 22,000 eating places
in New 1r oi k city.
