Redmond Team
Beats Prineville
Prineville, Jan. 21 The game
between Frank's Tavern team of
Redmond and the Pine Products
boys of this city failed to meas
ure up to anticipations Wednes
day night, when the Redmond
team overpowered the Lumber
jacks 42 to 27 in a double header
of the central Oregon town league
here. Ballyhooed as a feuding bat
tle, the first hall of the game was
so uninteresting that many spec
. .tators left for. home. In the sec
ond half, however, the players
of both teams provided some
thrills as they warmed to a fight
ing action, shooting baskets irom
long distances. Fox was star for
Frank's Tavern with 14 points,
while Noble was high point win
ner for Pine Products with 11.
The first game of the double
header session was between the
Farmers' Supply company team
of Culver and Ilouk Motor com
pany of Prineville. The visitors
kept a slight lead throughout
play, and grew better as time
ran out, defeating the Ilouk team
l(j to 36. Fitch led in Culver
scoring with 16 points while Mc
Faddcn accounted for 19 Ilouk
tallies.

New York, Jan. 21 HHi The tall,
square-shouldered fellow with the
shy, piano key smile leaned back
comfortably in his chair and al
lowed that Joe DiMaggio ought to
have a pretty good season and
maybe the Yankees would sur
prise those clamoring Indians and
Red Sox.
The big guy should know, for it
was old joltin' Joe talking about
himself and the ball club for
which he Is the wheel horse.
"It seems that every season
since I've been in the majors, I ve
had something wrong with me,"
he recalled. "I've had sore arms,
bad heels and what not. But right
now I feel great, in real top notch
physical condition, and maybe
this will be a right big season."
It is acknowledged that as goes
DiMaggio, so go tne Yankees. And
with the Yankee Clipper avidly
awaiting the opening of spring
training, the club which finished
only two games out In last year s
torrid pennant race may give
them all a surprise. Joe thinks so.
"After all, we have a good,
club," DiMaggio insisted. "If we
get good pitching, and we could
easily enough, we'll be in there
at the finish."
Joe had another heel operation
during this off season for remov
al of a heel spur. It had plenty
of time to heel and on a recent
trip to Florida, Joe tried hitting
some gungoes and the heel gave
him no trouble.
That Florida trip was an indi
cation of the place which Joe
holds in the hearts of American
youngsters.
He had planned a vacation In
Europe. But the boys and girls at
Mending Heart village in Miami,
children recovering from heart
diseases, had named Joe their
mayor. The National Children's
Cardiac foundation, which operat
es the home, asked Joe to accept
the title and help raise funds.
Joe is a sucker for kids. He has
one of his own and little Joe boss
es the old man around as if he
were a bush leaguer. So Di Mag
gio canceled his European vaca
tion and flew to Miami to talk
with 97 children who admire him.
It was a big day at Mending
Heart village when Joe arrived
to take over as mayor. And the
voice of Jimmy Brown, a saucer
eyed kid with blond hair, crack
ed when he handed DiMag the
key to the home
And men mere were me oea
patients, youngsters too weak for
the outdoor ceremonies. Joe visit
ed with them, handing out gifts
and signing the inevitable auto
graph books. The kids wore
bright, shining faces and a nurse
whispered:
"He does, more good than 'all
the 'medicine in the world. . j
Giving up his vacation to cfo
creditable things like that may be
one of the reasons Joe feels so
good right now. At 34, the base
ball grind may soon catch up to
him. But the Yankee Clipper
doesn't think so.!
